Hi All,

Newbie to the forum as well as the market. Really interested in primarily stacking, I've been looking at gold sovereigns mostly.

I wondered if there was any disadvantage to buying old sovereigns from the late 1800s/early 1900s compared to buying new ones other than the price. Atkinsons seems to sell these and they aren't much more than a 2024.

Thanks!

Hi. If your choice is to stack sovereigns, start with brand new. Keep them untouched by human hands in plastic capsules or in the original flips from Atkinsons. When the time to sell will come, they will sell in minutes if the price is right.

The older sovereigns are more for experienced collectors, there are too many mints and variations and can be tricky to judge the condition and scarcity.

Happy stacking!🤗

Hello to you.

Also remember there are other coins to stack and designs of various varieties  so choose designs you like too. I also think that in no way is Steffana endorsing the use of other species to handle the coins for you.

The old and new sovereigns contain the same amount of gold and are CGT-exempt, so they are identical in that regard

The difference comes with the colour, designs and numismatic (collectible) premiums

If you are just starting with sovereigns then keep it simple. There are some desirable recent designs (2022/2023), such as the platinum jubilee (2022, QEII), memorial (2022, KCIII) and coronation (2023, KCIII) coins

The main attraction for me personally in some of the older sovereigns is the colour! I also like the shield design (1838-1887) and the associated history. You will often find older sovs on TSF at roughly similar prices to the new sovs, so it's entirely up to you what you prefer to buy (graded, proofs, shields, scarce and other special design sovs can cost considerably more)

Chards have a great sovereign guide that is pretty comprehensive:

Mind is primary and mass-energy is derivative
