Great Seals of the Realm - Henry VIII

Recommended Posts

I am struggling to make my mind up on these. They could look really nice. Even though I am mainly a collector I try to only buy items that I believe won’t lose me money. Like coins it may come down to the mintage. For the first release the Royal Mint may decide to go low and test the market, but knowing what they are like it will most probably be the opposite!

The concept is interesting and the designs are intricate so that’s a +1 from me.

However, the prices have just been increased, so that’s a -1 from me.

I will be considering other aspects like:

- Denominations / variations
- Mintage of specific denominations

I will likely also consider buying from a dealer if they are cheaper than Royal Mint.

I think they are guaranteed to lose you money if you can readily get the 5x5oz and 6x5oz silver set of seals they made in 2006 for less than £800.

Thanks @paulmerton. That is very interesting. I didn’t know that the Royal Mint had issued a set of seals in 2006. Would you have a link by any chance?

I have now found the Royal Mint 2006 set of seals online. A very nice set but like you say they haven’t done great from a financial point of view. The number of Royal Mint releases worth purchasing is sadly diminishing.

Here's one that literally just sold after I posted that. I wonder who bought it 🤣

Sure, these are the 20th century ones, but I can't imagine even the Henry VIII factor commanding a 400+% premium down the line?

Or maybe these bargains are only possible because nobody is looking for something they didn't know existed?!

The more I look at these, the more impressed I am. The background fields have been done in a way to mimic the appearance of cooled wax that has sunken slightly and unevenly, rather than being a simple mirror of what the seal dies would have looked like. The depth really pops on some of them when you wibble them around in your hands, and the satin finish is nice also. 2D photos do not do them justice.

I feel like the upcoming release could be something special given that there's been nearly 20 years since these.

Been to a few and I always end up getting wasted on RM vin ordinaire

They call it vin proof 🤣

Is this at the mint or somewhere else? Tbf I’d enjoy that… except if it was a bad design and I wouldn’t be able to lie.. especially after a few vin impaired proofs🤣

Aaaahhh😉

I mean… what does the invitation state? Any information of interest? 🙂

I think the dress code specifically states no doc Martin’s.🤣

I’m sure you have a date for the issue though @GoldDiggerDave?

Aaaahhh😉
