Perth Mint 125th anniversary sovereign

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

2024 is the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint.

They have come up with a St George & Dragon design sovereign style gold proof which will be released shortly.

The video also mentions they will also release £5, £2 (double sovereign) and quarter sovereign versions and a set.

Giving that Perth a wide berth tbh. The bloke on brumby has not even speared the winged noperope.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

You reckon? Ya great galah...it's a sword not a spear!

I like it... but I don't think I will buy the proof version.  It is a pity it seems as if there is not a bullion version.

That’s actually what I thought when I seen it. Would definitely go for a bullion version if there was one.

I think the £5 version will look spectacular. Not sure about mintage level as yet. Also secondary market for the modern Perth “sovereign style” coins is weak although they have gone the right way this time introducing their own St George & Dragon rendition. I spoke to some of the Perth Mint team 3 or 4 years ago and suggested they use the standard UK 🇬🇧 Pistrucci St George & Dragon but they said there were too many licensing issues.

Hmm… but a private refinery (MMTC PAMP India) managed it, so I wonder what the issues might’ve been that were too many to overcome for the Perth Mint.

They had to promise to scuff a minimum of 27% of them and charge $200 more.

Aaaahhh😉

I spoke to them about PAMP and the I for India mint mark. A collector base has been established and that’s for the India mint that only operated for one year in 1918 whereas Perth minted 105 million sovereigns from 1899 to 1931. Given the comparison the Perth mint could generate a lot of interest producing proof and bullion sovereigns with the P mint mark.

I think the issue is really the difference between a privately owned and entrepreneurial PAMP versus a government owned corporation  whose main purpose is refining mined gold. The feedback seemed to be that it sounded like just too much effort.

Trust ‘Coin Portfolio Management’ to get their advertising wrong - No such thing as a 1/4oz gold Sovereign!…..😁
It was only a matter of time before there was confusion between a 1/4 Sovereign & a 1/4oz for buyer and seller. However, one is a 1.997g tiddlywink and the other a 7.7g pure gold coin. No contest for me.

Plus it’s not even released yet and no one taking orders . No idea who they are but I’d avoid personally.

Release is 7th July. Other sizes too.

  • 2 weeks later...

The larger size Perth Mint 125th anniversary sovereigns and their sets were released this morning.

Maximum Mintage by coin below

Quarter Sovereign- 3,275 available as a single coin and in the three and five coin sets

Half sovereign- 275 only available in the three and five coin sets. A pity as I would have bought one.

Sovereign- 2,325 coins was available from a few weeks ago and now in the three coin and five coin sets. They have also released a two coin set with the first 1899 P mint mark sovereign.

Double sovereign- 375 available as a single coin for A$2,589 and in the five coin set

Five pound sovereign- 125 coins and only available in the five coin set. Quick calculation shows the Perth Mint is charging a premium on the proofs over gold price of about 34.4%.
