Sovereign Cases in eBay - A Warning

Hi All

Firstly, @ChrisSilver sorry if this is in the wrong area and at the best that I could find to ensure of Sovereign folks.

As well as sovereigns, I collect high quality sovereign cases.

Over the last 18 months, I have seen an increase of what I think are high quality replica sovereign cases pitched as antiques on eBay and even one auction house…

Below I have attached a photo that I have taken from eBay.  I have seen exactly the same Sovereign case sold on eBay but most suspiciously at least two identical ones by the same seller.  (Who does not answer my mails when I ask if it is reproduction or old).

You might think that this is “small beer” but I have seen brass cases sold for more than the cost of a sovereign frequently.

I am happy to be wrong with respect to authenticity of these but I very much think they are repro, being sold for antique money.

Best

This looks like reproduction. It looks new.

This one does, others have what I suspect to be artificial “patina” applied.

My guess is the original was gold with precious stone eyes. Also, so suspect this is Eastern European rather than Chinese.
