Why is it not even legal tender ?

 

Scottish banknotes have never been legal tender, though there is a common misconception that they are.

 

When I used to work in a shop, occasionally someone would want to pay with a Scottish note. Typically the cashiers would be somewhat suspicious as we tended not to see Scottish notes very frequently, with the (mostly Scottish) customers insisting that we have to accept the note because "it's legal tender". In my experience this line was always delivered with a degree of indignation. What they should have said is that it's acceptable to tender for payment. 

 

Only Bank of England notes are legal tender, and in fact only in England and Wales. Scotland to my knowledge does not have legal tender laws, which are actually irrelevant when it comes to buying something in a shop anyway.

Got a package from them today actually, all legal tender silver coins

If I remember correctly, the Scottish banks have equal value of their currency held at the BofE in the form of large denomination notes. I can't be bothered checking but I think there are £1 mil and £10 mil notes one of which is called the Titan and the other called something else (maybe Goliath).

Being English but having married a Scot and lived half my life in the land of whiskey, haggis and buckfast wine, I took great pride in telling the locals that their "funny money" wasn't legal tender. In fact the difference is that while bank of England notes are legal tender south of the border, Scottish and Northern Irish notes are only "Legal currency". And even better is that the vagaries of Scottish law is that NO bank notes, including the Bank of England ones as well as their own are legal tender north of the border,

Just wondering how STG decides which silver coins to stock.

Heard about it, Highland Tiger. In Germany we say 'You have the no, you could have a yes' - unfortunately however we can not offer any forum discount. Company is still young and needs to watch its budget, too! =) However if an individual orders in large amounts (4-digit quantities), we are happy to discuss the price on the phone.

 

Considering Pete's question: In order to act according to the VAT law, that allows us to sell the coins VAT free, we need to buy the coins outside the EU or from private sellers. That's the most important factor when we choose coins - besides this, we chose coins which we think sell well and give us a reasonable margin. No one wants goods that stay in stock forever =) As Silver-to-go just started in 2014, we will increase our stock step by step.

If you could post up here each time you release a new coin onto the website, that would be good.

Don't know about the roomers, but I can clearly say that we will not accept bitcoins in the future. We have examined the whole thing a while ago and think it is not safe enough for our business.

 

I will try to keep you guys posted here about new coins, however I can't promise to never miss out...these days everyday work got busier, not much spare time.
