I don't " prefer using plastic" and neither do millions of other people. The problem we have is most people adopt the herd mentality, they follow the crowd and while they are busy chewing the cud, Boom! they cant go for a sh!t without the banks approval, give me cash any day of the week.

Some idiot thought experimenting with covid19 was a good idea.

The fact is that in places where cash and plastic are readily available and accepted, nearly everyone uses plastic. It's a bit silly to claim this is 'herd mentality' - it's simply a much more convenient and safer method of payment.

"Cashless society" is a euphemism for mass surveillance and the sheep are signing up for it. Stalin would have loved it.

That’s your opinion. Nobody has forced a cashless society, you’re welcome to use cash if you like.

The simple fact you’re avoiding is plastic is more convenient and safer. That’s why people use it. Insulting them because they don’t share you’re very niche world view is childish.

I have managed most of my life without plastic and haven't come to any grief. All of a sudden plastic is safe, plastic convenient, plastic is wonderful, plastic is sooo super-duper, how on earth are we ever going to survive without it...plastic is ruining the planet, plastic is killing our wildlife, plastic is polluting our environment, yes let's hear it for plastic!! Sadly that's the mature grown-up view of the world, if you want to call it "childish" that's your prerogative.

You’re joking right? Cards last longer than cash, and cash involved coins which are much worse for the environment to produce. Not to mention cash has to be shipped around in trucks from where it’s produced to where you withdraw it, then on to where you spend it, then back again and so on. Then replaced every 1-2 years for notes. Not to mention all the other physical infrastructure required around cash. You’re just trying to fit things to support your narrative.

Plastic cards are safer than cash. You get protection on unauthorised spend, a method of authentication (usually PIN), and they’re easy to cancel if stolen. Plastic cards can also be used across the world, unlike cash. With cards you can have all your money available to you wherever, unlike cash. With cards you can pay any amount in seconds, whereas with cash you have to fuss about with change. The user experience is far better with cards, hence why most people have converted to it where available.

You may wish to stay off-the-grid or whatever, that’s fine - good for you, not saying you can’t do that at all. But if you’re going to insult people (like myself) who use cards and don’t share your mindset, expect to get called out on it.

hmmmm so you are totally plastic free in your mature grown up world then and you haven’t caused any grief towards any of the items you highlighted.....

I take it you have never heard of the children in the Congo who slave from dusk to dawn up to their necks in sh!t mining for cobalt just so you can pay using your smartphone  for your latte and avocado toast in your safe sterile environment never having to touch another human being. Great achievement.

We were talking about cards vs cash. Evidently that's no longer convenient for you. Shall we take it that you don't own a smartphone either then?

I never realised everyone in the world who uses a card or smartphone to pay for things must drink latte, eat avocado toast and avoid interacting with humans. What a fantastic insight.

Out of interest, do you believe the nonsense you're typing?

It's a shame you're so unwilling to have a sensible conversation and repeatedly turn to insulting people who don't think the same as you. I've said multiple times you're entitled to your opinion and you're entitled to use cash. However there's a stark difference between you saying you prefer cash versus you saying the vast majority of people who prefer more modern mechanisms for payment are "snowflakes", "sheep" etc. That's where you move from having an opinion in to the realm of talking nonsense.

Ironic you say that to Uksilverstackers given your own performance on this thread. Very easy to result to name calling when you'd rather avoid the subject.

Herd, sheep, snowflake applied in the proper context is not insulting.

If you think that's insulting, that's your problem, not mine.

Absolutely, when referring to animals and winter weather it's not insulting at all. Unfortunately that's not how you used it.

My last word on the topic.

You need to get out more. Also read some books on the definitions applied to humans regarding animal behavior. Nothing insulting, simply facts.

Does a plastic card really last longer than cash? What about the various gold coins that get dug up from the ground after 2000 years and still it has value. I would love to see what my plastic card would be worth in 2000 years time.I can barely get mine to last 3 years without it beginning to fall apart.

I agree that with plastic comes convenience and safety  as well as other costs and benefits. However, you cannot deny that the govt would be tempted to use the data to snoop on people and examine their behaviour. Its an infringement of our freedom and liberty. Also, what happens if there is a computer failure and you cannot use your plastic. In an uncertain world there is a place for both and it gives the consumer the right to exercise their choice. I know which boat I'm in.

You must be wayyyy better off that me mate, I don't pay for my shopping with gold coins 🤣

The context of the conversation is important here. We were talking about cash (i.e. notes and change) versus cards. My position has never been that cash has no place, just that it's ridiculous to call people that use cards for all the obvious benefits they give in terms of security and convenience "sheep" etc. People can of course use whatever they wish, nobody to my knowledge is trying to remove cash.

This then devolved into an environment discussion, to which I pointed out the environmental impact of cards is far lower than the impact of cash which has to be produced, replaced regularly, and constantly shipped around in trucks between shops, ATMs, bank etc.

You're using a computer and network using amounts of minerals and metals, its not just smartphones with some ethically questionable supply chains.

That's probably the push that I need to stop looking at zodiacs and to finally pull my finger out and buy one, but you know the old saying, ''if it flys, floats, or fornicates, it's cheaper to rent than own''.

LOL, I haven't heard that one exactly, but it's a good concise way to say it.
