2020 Una and the Lion

A new teaser video by the Royal Mint is up.

It seems rather random that they would do this iconic design for 2020. I’d have thought they would save something special like this for HM’s platinum jubilee which is literally 2 years away.

Well to be fair its one of the most popular coins - even modern copies sell fairly well. If this is selling as a bullion sov I am buying a tube/

True. But what’s the logic of having it for a random year like 2020 when some big, memorable anniversaries are literally just around the corner? 🤷🏻‍♂️

They need a big win - the last few issues were not that successful. The RM is in financial trouble and need to focus on their numismatic section more. I suspect we will see more interesting stuff coming out of them.

That explanation makes sense. Personally I just feel it’s a waste of a timeless design to issue it in such a non-memorable year.

Also, as we’ve discussed in another thread, the minimum size gold version is about 2oz, so they’re obviously targeting a very specific demographic.

Its a bloody shame if they dont do it in affordable gold sizes. The Shield Sov and Half Sovs were a hit as were the Richard versions.

I guess the design won't work well in a sov or lower. Pity they aren't doing a 1/2 oz. Dread to think what they'll be charging for the chosen sizes.

It could’ve worked just fine on a 1 oz size.

2 oz, as a proof, at RM prices, will be way beyond the budget of most collectors.

Sad because I would’ve liked to at least consider buying this.

Anyway I hope they don’t milk it with 7 different variations 😐

I sincerely hope they eventually release a 1oz bullion gold coin version.  I'd be all over it in an instant.  Come on Royal Mint, you know you want to!

I really wish they had just done a regular Five Pound like the original. It would’ve at least been a bit more affordable, and truer to the original in terms of gold content and not having that ugly £200 denomination on the obverse.

Not sure i understand the marketing strategy here.  Big up a fine design, noting history and popularity (?), then only make available as very exclusive large denominations (and token high premium silver).
