2019 Piedfort Sovereign and Five Sovereign

I just received an email from the Coin Connection about these two new releases.

Apparently lower mintage than previous years, but whatever, I really don’t see these moving at all (unless they do something gimmicky like matte proofs... they better not! 🥴)

Five pounds sounds interesting, wonder what's different! That's one series I wish I'd bought into when I started, a bit late (for me, not for others necessarily!) alas.

The Piedfort continues to mystify but as I have the previous ones I'm very glad to see it continue (though hope the Mint doesn't thoroughly mess it up with some contrived privy or finish or whatnot). I'm still very keen on the first two and think they will do OK in the longer-term. Lower mintage is good. I'm thinking 1250, something like that, I'd be (perhaps very nicely) surprised at 1000. I won't be buying though as this time there's no real reason apart from the 'set'. Both Pistrucci anniversary and the Sapphire Coronation fit into a few sets each, and cover mine - depending on what they do here (if it's a gimmick) it may only fall into one or two.

Interesting!

The 2018 piedfort with the 65 anniversary privy was available on the RM site until a couple months back if I’m recalling correctly. And the 2018 Five Sovereign is still not sold out.

Reducing the mintage of the 2019 Proofs hardly achieved anything. I highly doubt a reduction in the mintages of these two will either.

The RM has saturated the market with just too many varieties of Sovereigns and variations on its design.

I will be buying the 5SOV BU this year as I gather that it will be highly desirable. The 5SOV size has a lot of interest right now despite cost and if it happens that these sell for 25% less in 12 months time on ebay I will buy a 2nd one and average the cost. There is a discount code for Coin Connection in July KEITH and this gets 2% off. I am pretty sure it can also be used for pre-orders.

What makes you suspect it will be highly desirable?

Is this discount only valid for Keith? What is it?

Don’t see the desirability personally beyond the norm. Nice coin, standard modern design. That’s it. The force grows weak young paduwan.

I think the young hot terrible marketers the RM brought in are running out of steam.

Indeed. But does mintage really even matter at this point given the numerous variations of this poor coin?

Where does the RM draw the line?

What will we have next year - plain edge Piedfort and Five Sovereign?

And the following year plain edge PLUS matte?

And then 2021 to celebrate the Queen’s 95th birthday something else special?

And what about 2022 to commemorate 70 years of HM’s accession?

And then 2023 to commemorate 70 years of HM’s coronation?

The last 5 years have had so many variations, and so can the next 5.

I totally agree with what you are saying about the Royal Mint's issue policy.  And then we had the winning of the cricket world cup last week and they could not be bothered to do anything special for it!

Anyway getting back to the Matt Quintuple Sovereign, I think it looks interesting, it's a first in terms of the quintuples, and it is a low mintage.  So, fell for it and I've ordered one from CC.
