My first sovereign

Hey gold stackers. I stack/collect silver but I do have this one half sovereign, am just wondering what you guys think of it, regarding the year and if you can tell if she's real or not? The thickness checks out on the calipers but the diameter is around 0.1mm short. Does this slight difference matter?

Diameter :19.22mm

Thickness :1.02mm

Check the weight too..if it's slightly light then it might be from wear

Wait til you get your second or more...nothing quite like the sound and feel of them clanking together....or just walking along rolling one acros the fingers and spinning them up in the air...

I love pouring them out of my velvet bag and lightly tossing them in the air when in the pouch...like Robin Hood.

Hahaa you lot are funny. But do you think that the coin looks funny, or legit? I have just seen others from this year on the Internet and where George and the dragon is, it seems more raised or not as raised as mine

I dont have one from that year, but looking in the spink coin reference, S.3878, the photo does look very "raised" aswell. to me it looks strange, but then so does the photo in the book. Its lost some detail from the raised details sections on the queen and george, but looks similar to what I see in the book. However, Im not an expert.

Not much to add really, these do have quite a high relief. The photos look strange but that's probably a result of the low cross lighting.

The only thing that bothers me is the wear pattern, especially on the reverse; lots of wear and lack of detail on the relief but none on the rim. Possibly someone spent all their time rubbing the coin between their fingers?

It might be fake but it's a bullion coin so as long as the size and weight are correct then why worry?

Or it was from a ring, the side up getting worn, the side down away from wear and the edges were the holding point...I have a 1986 half sovereign which I got for my 21st and the reason I started colections them..the wear pattern would be the same...I bet if I popped mine out of the ring it would be worn on one side and no edge worn even though I've had it for over 30 years.

Have been looking through the gold threads, like the one for sovereigns and how a lot of them can sometimes be different, also the recent one about the short tail/long tail and it's quite interesting.

I think I will put silver stacking on hold for a while and save up towards getting some more half full sovereigns.

Correct, it did come from a ring

The 1986 are a more valuable beast...but I'd never get rid of mine of course..but colections sovs is good when there's an offer on, I usually get some when the 8% and 10% Ebay bucks are on as it's not considered bullion in the states...and right now there's an 8% bucks off er going so another couple on order.
