Flog It!

Did anybody see today's compilation episode of "Flog It!" on BBC1?  Late in the show there was a 1887 £5 ungraded sovereign going under the hammer. Worth a look if you can get it on a catch up service such as BBC iPlayer. Just wondered if anyone from the forum happened to be the lucky buyer?

I hope not.

Almost certainly fake and £1400 + buyers commission will take it up to £1750 or so. It's worth it's bullion value only.

What's the chance of a gold coin bought in Crete being fake? I've no idea but why would the owner be selling it? He's always wanted one, needed it to complete the 1887 set and it was a very good grade coin.

He knew it was fake, that's why he's offloading it! 😁

Also, where do they find these auctioneers? Bids over £1000 in £10 increments; most of them do £50 at this level.

What a BS story - as pointed out.

The guy had to have this coin to complete his collection - it is in decent condition - so the coin completes a collection but he is selling it. Yeah right.
He allegedly bought it for £1000 but was happy to let it go for £800 - there's 1.177oz of gold in one of those coins so scrap value it is £1165 worth in it at today's prices - probably not a million miles from the price then. So he is 'happy' to take a 30% hit in the spot value. This is an 'expert' collector selling the coin and the BBC expert is giving this expert opinion.

The guy could have posted it to HGM and sold it for more, even if it were totally mangled up.

The coin is fake, he's a liar, the BBC expert is a charlatan, it's all fake - but what more can we expect from the BBC.

Bizarre, unless the Beeb programme team, with a decent budget, said they just wanted that particular item on the show and came to an arrangement to make the difference up if it sold for under spot ? Otherwise, one of those two parties is not being honest. Anyone feel like writing to Aunty Beeb ? 😁
