Fractional Gold

I'm currently stacking silver but want to dip my toes into the gold market.

I'm really a fan of Britannia's but when I'm looking at gold it seems that's Sovereigns are the way to go, I'm initially looking at 1/10oz Brits or half sovs to start with, gold will be for the long term so not in a rush to start buying Oz's yet, what do people recommend?

Thanks.

Half sovs. Yes, there is a premium over the 1oz coin but it can be made back if you ever decide to sell.

Definitely not 1/10 Proof Brits. These should all be offered to @Roy at a low percentage over spot. Box and COA appreciated but not essential.

You just missed out on one of @shawy2510's bullion sales. Cheap gold, keep an eye on his posts 😉

From a bullion dealer: -

1. One ounce: -

Queens Beast (latest new).  Expect to pay about 4.85% premium.

Britannia (preowned).  Expect to pay about 3.05% premium for pre 2013.

Britannia (new).  Expect to pay about 4.7% premium.

Krugerrand (preowned).  Expect to pay about 2.6% premium.

2.  Almost 1/4 ounce.

UK full sovereign (preowned).  Expect to pay about 6.6%

UK full sovereign (new).  Expect to pay about 7.25%

From an individual.

  Lowest premium.

I have been shying from one ounce purchases in the beginning as well, and I think around quarter ounce trade coins, like the Sovereign (and a couple more for us continental guys) are the way to go. It is a nice way to begin with gold without overexerting oneself, and they are highly liquid. Sure the intrinsic gold price will be lower than what you paid at the moment, but you almost always can sell a little higher as well. Quarter ounce bullion coins are nice as well. I feel that it is a very handeable size. I am not sure about 1/10 or lower (some go down to 1/20 or 1/25 even), as the premium gets ridiculous then.

I've got 2 half sov's that I'm selling if anyone is interested I can do them at £120 each plus post dealer's are changing between £125-£129 each at the moment so if any of you want them pm me for pics but can't post out until Wednesday or they will be up on the sales thread then

Good luck in your fractional gold stacking. I'm not buying or selling in the UK, so these are just some relevant, tangential thoughts.

When I jumped into fractional gold, I began with the 1/10 gold Eagles. But then I realized that they have a very high premium, around 15% usually. Acceptable if that's all I can find, but then I found the Mexican 5 peso (approximately 1/8 ounce), which typical can be had for about a 5% to 8% premium. So now that's my default impulse fractional buy. The 2 pesos (approximately 1/20 ounce) tend to have a higher premium.

In the sovereign category, I'll look at the pre-1933 half Eagles ($5 denomination), especially the pre-1908 Liberty head design. So far I've been able to find them for less than 6% premium. The quarter Eagles (half sovereign) tend to have a higher premium.

Main lesson is that the mid-sized fractions seem to be the best value.
