Hello All

I thought i'd introduce myself. I came across this forum after recently watching several of @Numistacker informative videos!

I am a new collector of sovereigns. Not sure what my end game is yet, but probably a mixture of investing (diversifying my portfolio with bullion and sovs close to spot price), maybe trading too and getting to grips with the numismatic side.

I've got into all this basically after inheriting a few sovereigns and getting an interest in the various designs and the values for them. I have the Marsh book which has been a good starting point.

It also came about indirectly by my mother (a post office mistress) giving me loads (and still does) coins in circulation which i sell on ebay (i.e some of the £2, the new A-Z 10p and the 50ps like Newton and Beatrix Potter). Yep i'm one of those people! Basically ftom that, getting an interest in coins which then followed onto gold coins!

Looking forward to having discussion with some of you knowledgeable folk!

Many thanks

Hi and welcome from Edinburgh.  I seem to have found a wee hotspot for Beatrix Potter 50 pences, the wee shops near a local post office.  Girlfriend colects them, been getting loads lately.

Hello! and Ha! I have a sealed bad of each of the nine designs so far. Not sure what i'm going to do with them - i guess my two girls will get them one day!

As I'm a scientist, the 50p Newton is my favourite (though i'm a biochemist not physicist!)

So i've been on this forum for over 2 weeks now and have had a good search and look at various topics/posts and PMed a few friendly folk on here purchasing bits and bobs. I've been enjoying the forum!

Based on all of the research/info i think i have come up with a strategy to my PM (mostly gold) stacking and coin collecting!

1) As i initially set out, to invest in sovereign bullion (as a investment diversity play) and certain sovereign proof (my girls birth years {thanks @silversurf for the 2013, just the 2010 to get} and the alternative designs). I have the 2005 and 2017 which are currently with @Numistacker for grading. Like many others i came across this forum from watching his videos.

2) It wasn't my intention (but reading posts on here probably pushed me to it haha!), but i've got myself up to date with the 1/4 oz bullion queens beasts (two from @richatthecroft) and others from dealers. Buying only 1 of each certainly does have a high premium! But i'm up to date, and really like looking at them, even the wife showed some interest. I've even got one of those wonderful wooden boxes from a fellow LFC fan @Alun

3) This is about enjoyment too so if any gold coins with designs that appeal to me with not a huge premium and other factors like low mintage, then i might purchase - like the Oriental border Brit

4) I'm sticking mostly to gold, but i have seen some really nice designs in silver so i'll buy the odd one here and there, again for enjoyment rather than investment! I've got some on the way from @terakris and some rounds from @Skelator88. I think my 5yo and 8yo will enjoy looking at them. I can't see myself buying much more silver but who knows those group buys that @BackyardBullion organises so brilliantly might tempt me!

5) Probably a school boy error, but continue to collect the BUNC £5 coins. My mother transferred her collection to me (which she accumulated as a sub postmistress) and i'm now in that cycle of collecting them even though they are probably a rip off!!!

So thats my 5 pronged attack strategy. Now a tiny bit more about myself. I'm a biochemist/neuroscientist previously working on a novel therapy for Alzheimer's disease for a small biotech, eventually running out of money! I now work for a specialist service company providing scientific/experimental consultancy to virtual and small biotechs. Apart form science, my other passion is horse racing. So far i've been profitable (using stats, trends, patterns and systems) and that allows me to lock in those profits using the strategy above as well as pay for holidays or the mortgage! Maybe something for another post/forum/blog.

Thats me, maybe it will promote some further conversations.

I'll just finish with a sewing hobby my wife has. She has just started out at making bespoke bags. If that is something of interest maybe if the moderators @morezone / @HelpingHands allow i can put up her instagram link? Not sure if something could be designed to fit a PM stacker's needs?

Here's that Instagram link for my wife's bespoke bags - https://www.instagram.com/stitchedbyarwa/

Welcome - I am also  based in Cambridge.

Have you ever visited any coin dealers on Cambridge?

Hello Dicker!

Nice to hear from someone in the 'bridge. I'm in Cherry Hinton.

Never been to any of the coin dealers, wouldn't even know where to start. I did email Cambridge coins for some sovereigns, but he replied twice with answers not to my questions, so will just not bother with them!

Have you been to any? I've thought about popping into cash converters etc to see if I could bag something but finding the time is the issue!

Hi Hoze

I have not been to any but will pop into Gannochy at some point for a chat.

Sadly places like CC's dont ever seem to be competitive -they have to make a margin.

Welcome to the forum @h103efa! As someone who has had many sad dealing with this disease, this piqued my interest! A "novel" therapy? Can you divulge more?

I like the shirt dress she made on her insta - I'm always envious of anyone who can sew! :D

Thanks for the reply @BleyerBullion

In terms of Alzheimer's, yes its a horrible disease like the other neurodegenerative syndromes. Unfortunately also not enough money is funding research into therapies for these diseases despite the large increase in numbers being diagnosed with them.  AD only received 10% funding that cancer research does. Any therapy that even delays the onset of AD by 2 years will have huge cost savings in social care etc but the government have been slow to take this on board and pharma/biotechs are finding it hard to devise clinical trials to test novel therapies!

Anyway, a few years after the small biotech i worked for researching AD ran out of funding, i did try to write a few blog articles to explain what i did. Have a look here. Happy to go into it more if you are interested once you've had a read.

Basically we were looking for compounds that would stop the toxic actions of the protein Amyloid oligomers!

Wrt to the wife's sewing. Yep she only started a few years ago but always wanted to do it. She's gone from a pillow case to make up bag to shirts/dresses and now bags. She also makes her work trousers (with pockets, apparently hard to find) and my daughter's leggings etc.

So i thought i'd come back to my PM strategy, now that about 6 months have gone by since i've joined the forum (if anything this is for me own record). I have "met" a lot of friendly people on here always willing to offer advice on this stacking/collecting game! Big thanks to @terakris @kimchi @GoodAsGold @Lr103 @Marc @SovTracker amongst others!

So how have i performed compared to my plan above?

1) I managed to get up to date with all the variety sovereign proofs and if they were not graded already, sent them to @Numistacker. The slight outlier is having a double 1989 rather then the full (a purely financial decision). But this came back graded a PF70 so doesnt really bother me at all. I have the various designs (and my kids birth years) and that was the goal.

I also got myself some history buying numismatic gold with help form @SovTracker, a PCGS graded MS62 1855 sov.

2) Fully up to date with the 1/4 oz bullion Queen Beasts and in a nice box too!
https://thesilverforum.com/topic/11158-today-i-received/?do=findComment&comment=244164

3) I did buy some other gold such as a Mexican 20 peso (with the likeable Aztec Calendar) and my absolute favourite, the Dragon & Phoenix  Gold 1 ouncer!

4) The silver - i may have diverted off the plan way more than i anticipated here. I managed to stack over 200 oz, the majority from forum members or @BackyardBullion group buys! I may think about selling some of this in the future, but for now its just another storage of funds!

5) Still continuing with the £5 BUNC collection....

With both the gold and silver buying, i have used the "Buy what you like", not what you think may go up in value. I think i will change this to "Buy what you like or what the wife says". I wasnt intending to buy the Stephen Hawking coins, but she said to, for a variety of reasons. At the moment it looks like her decision was correct!

I'm still doing my usual selling of circulated coins on ebay and groups in the background, so if anyone is in need, just holla. Where i can help out a fellow forum member I will!

I'll come back to this in another 6 months and see where I am... "This time next year Rodney"

A bit of an update some 20 months later....

Added a few more gold proofs including the science based 50p versions (Newton 🍏🔭, Hawkings 🌌🎇 & Franklin 🧬) and another really special Phoenix all the way from @Marc in Japan. Also bullion gold whenever I could especially those H&B deals or when the likes of @arshimo2012 or @kneehow2018 have something, they always do...

Completed the 1/4 oz gold Queens Beasts collection...

Bought a bit of silver here and there, like the Korean Phoenix. Tried very hard not to get suckered into the numerous sets of collections out there. The only one that did catch me was the St Helena Trade Dollar Set of 5 coins. A bit of colourful enammelled coins too, cheers @Panda6Pack

Met a few forum members in person at the coin shows and also continuing some good chats with others ... @terakris@kimchi@GoodAsGold@Tn21@shawy2510@Numistacker@AgD

Stopped with the £5 BUNC and will be slowly selling most of that off, so do message if any collect these...
