I would say it is something that is undoubtedly happening but to what extent really is anyone's guess. The decision to delcare items is mostly voluntary. The caveat obviously is that you could be "randomly" pulled aside and required to empty your bags/luggage. I really have no idea what penalty someone smuggling silver would face at that point. I travel to Canada and back usually once a year or so to see family and pretty much always bring some form of silver back with me. I do try to keep it within the tax free allowance though just in case. I've speculated in other threads that in theory someone travelling to Canada or the US could get around the limit by briging back under $10000 face value worth of silver Canadian dimes or quarters since those coins are still technically circulating coinage so should count as cash but its not something I've ever tested.

AppleZippoandMetronome reacted to tpcob303 in Does anyone else feel disappointed by the new Star Wars coins
I was hoping for some decent designs, Vader, X-Wings, Storm/Clone/FO troopers, Tie-Fighters/interceptors/Bombers chewbacca, R2D2 etc etc etc
And yes they have announced R2D2 with CP30 but tbh I don't want them together on the same coin, I wanted them separated even though they appear together in the films (except PM - as C3P0 was still being built)
I wanted to collect the characters individually. I wanted a darks side collection and light side collection, a trooper collection, a clone collection and first order collection (even though I didn't like the new films the FO troopers still have cool suit armour)
I'm annoyed they had to do 50p coins, when I wanted Thomas the Tank Engine. I'm annoyed the mint never listens, I'm annoyed that I know the quality will be rubbish, mintage high to cater for their bottom lines and devalue the sets.

The good news I got today was my memorial sovereign is on its way back from grading with some bank notes from PMG. That my coronation sovereign 3 coin set arrived with my ngc grading submitter and have been sent off.
Who will be avoiding this Star Wars set and be focusing on just filling in the gaps of their sovereign collection. I just Need to get a double proof memorial and coronation and quarter proof jubilee then I'm moving onto 2017, then 2002 proof sovereigns, I see these coins as far more worthy.
So don't find my lack of faith disturbing, just I can't be bothered to buy another 50p or Special Royal Mint release. 🤔

Depending on spot price and timescales most likely an ETF 😆 Poured silver quite possibly the worst way to "invest" in Silver but I would agree the most pleasing or enjoyable way to hold silver, a who knows you might find a collector that must have whatever it is you've got. I don't think people should buy hand poured unless they are comfortable with a negative real return.

These RM anomalies do occur occasionally and taking advantage of them is generally very profitable if you have the time to wait.
Another example is the 2009 silver £1 shieldback. The proof coin has a mintage of 8,508 and sells for £20-£25.
The BU version was the first of its kind.. and a box-office debacle. With a maximum mintage of 50,000 only 359 were actually sold. As such it is the rarest silver decimal definitive coin ever minted. The current going rate is £200 unless you get very lucky.

" As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there is no specific historical significance or connection between the 29th of June and Prince Charles, the current heir apparent to the British throne. Prince Charles was born on November 14, 1948, and his major life events, such as his investiture as the Prince of Wales, marriage to Princess Diana, and other significant moments, do not have a direct association with the 29th of June. It's important to note that circumstances can change, and new developments may have occurred since my last update. "
Anyone got any ideas Or clues ??

I don't have any to hand to take pictures of but I do try to make an effort to pick up the BU packs for the £2 and 50p coins that don't get released into circulation. I have to admit that I've been better at grabbing the £2 coins than the 50p's but thats mostly because I have a preference for them and its easier to track since the mint isn't putting any £2 coins into circulation currently.

These were also a good one to get, again due to the limited edition, and quite novel as there aren't many bunc packs that show the obverse by default.

There are some BU packs out there that definitely weren't a waste of money.
This one came out last year, and a lot of people shunned it for being quite expensive and having 3 grubby circulated coins in it. But the smart kids realised the BU coin in the set had a unique privy mark and that only 2,022 of them would ever be made.

Indeed. The King represents almost all good parts of this country. He's about heritage, continuity, national unity, and all that once was that will still be for ages to come. People talk about a declining Britain under his (and our late Queen's) reign, but really is it the old ways that caused this decline, or our contemporary divergence therefrom?
The 1902 matt proof aren't doing exactly well though. The mintage was too high compared to 1911 or 1937, and the unique matt finish is partially why they're all graded very low. I think they're underperforming and am going to grab a few more.

Depends solely on premium, if the average bullion sovereign is going right now for approximately £390, then if you can get a half sovereign for around half that "£195" absolutely go for it, even £200 is worth the purchase. Its when half the item begins to cost a silly premium £210 etc, your throwing money away imho.
Now factor in that if gold heads where most of us think it's going in 5 years time "upwards " a half sovereign will become the sought-after/affordable coin.
The easiest way to explain it is...any piece of gold is worth buying if the premium is acceptable.

I've written about this in other threads mostly on the topic of grading more broadly but yes...  you have to imagine with many more examples of "the perfect coin" the values will certainly have an impact long term. Does that make it a bad buy long term? It's debateable but I think they're worth buying. I bought into the memorial sovs and will buy into the coronation sovs. With the mintage of the coronation sovs I'll wait a few months because I believe they'll be available for under issue price but long term I think they'll be a safe bet.
I do think its worth warning about the potential of them not performing well long term. I think too many of us get caught up in situations where we expect lightning to stike twice, or three times or four times, etc, etc. The expectation that a special issue sov will well outperform a regular issue one is something that will become less and less a thing the more the mint puts out those special issues. This will be the third one in a row. At what point do they stop being special and start just being a regularly changing thing? Throwing grading into the mix you certainly can't expect the values of these coins to match special issues where mintages were lower and coin preservation isn't what it is today because there will be so many more "perfect" examples in the market. I and others think these coins are a fairly safe bet but I'll be the first to admit with everything taken into account its just a guess and we could all easily be wrong.

Well the Sovereign is in a totally different league from any of these modern coin ranges.
The Sovereign is a tiny 7.98gm coin but it continues a centuries old tradition, it is pretty much unrivalled by any other coin today, and St. George and the Dragon is its quintessential representation.
The modern coin ranges, both by the Royal Mint and every other Mint, are just a way to sell precious metals in new and interesting ways. Sometimes they are nice, sometimes they start to become classics of our age, and sometimes they are gimmicky.
But none of them have the pedigree that the Sovereign does.
The Sovereign doesn’t need to be made relevant. It’s appeal is in its timelessness.
    Imo! 🙂

Was it really necessary for RM to release a memorial sovereign? A memorial coin is understandable but did it have to be the sovereign? And the increased mintage numbers, along with the other new releases just floods the market with "special" design sovereigns. The increased RRP makes it harder to hold their premium and generally doesn't sit well with many customers as the feeling of it being a money spinner takes the gloss off the actual product.
Credit where it's due, for all the criticism of their quality control, over 95% of the census achieving a 70 shows a high production standard, but makes them not really any more valuable on the secondary market. So you now have customers covering the grading costs and not really seeing any great return for their efforts, if they choose to sell quickly.
Mid to long term, who knows what the future holds. All of the one-off designs have a lot going for them. But what will the market look like in future? RM will surely have to tone it down with all these new sovereign designs, but there's no guarantee of that happening. What if there is a new monarch again soon? Are we going to see this repeat itself? It's too much already imo.
