I think the Pro models can detect that, but don't quote me on it. The standard version only detects metal content/purity up to a certain depth in millimetres. You can use calipers to measure the width and height of the coin to see if it's within standards provided by the mint.
On the standard version I own you can seleect different types of pre-loaded and calibrated coin purity ranges such as modern 999 or older 958 (i think) silver britannias. Or pre 1933 US gold coins and modern 22ct gold coins from different countries. Maybe that's what you are talking about. You select the type of coin you want to test, calibrate the sigma and place the coin on/under the sensor. If it falls in the bracket range, it's genuine. If it doesn't you can readjust the coin or turn it around etc to get a positive reading as the standard version isn't 100% reliable.

Approximately £780 (after converting) with shipping included via DPD. Then VAT on top once it arrived in the UK (before delivery).
If I'm not mistaken this is the link I used (link from my email/order confirmation): https://zetberg.com/sk/kupit/sigma-metalytics

It's also possible that the difference in thickness, if there is one, is due to the rim only. Can you tell if the relief is deeper?
I'd clean the tarnish off for sure. The aluminum foil and baking soda method works extremely well for this type of tarnish, and is harmless to the coin, unlike silver dips and polishes. It's also dirt cheap.
After cleaning, I'd securely store the coins so that they never tarnish again. Do you know how they got exposed to air? Were they in tubes? It's unusual for bullion to tarnish when stored in tight tubes. If I leave coins in flips, which are not sealed, and throw them in a sock drawer, they'll tarnish in two months or so. Hard lesson. So I don't do that anymore – I keep them all in Ziploc snack bags (smaller than sandwich bags), or tubes. I also throw anti-tarnish tabs and strips into the bags and tubes. They're cheap, and they absorb the sulfur in the air.

    Still works for me though.
For example, when I returned from my first ski chalet holiday, my wife asked me "Did you sleep with the chalet girls".
My answer, without hesitation: "Not a wink!"

Honesty is almost always the best policy*
A straight question to a dealer in my experience gets a straight answer.
    * Married gentlemen know that an honest answer to questions like…do you like my new haircut / dress is not always the best approach and a bare faced lie can avoid all sorts of complications.

I / we don't like pretence. It is low level dishonesty, but extremely common.
I would much prefer it if someone asks "Can I pick your brain?"
If someone simply want to know if they have got a sovereign or a half, we can usually tell with milliseconds, and are happy to help inform people.
Sure, if someone wants a more thorough test and appraisalem we are also happy to to do it for a charge.
Jewellers often know very little about coin, but don't realise how little they know. Don't let them acid test your coin.
    Pawnbrokers are worse than jewellers.
You coin is undoubtedly a half sovereign.
You wouldn't get that sort of service for nowt in Yorkshire.
BTW: Have you ever heard of Harvey Ross?

    Hey Marcus
You've had some really good advice from several top members of the forum and there's not much I can add to it really, apart from maybe going into more detail about the premium memberships.
The membership level is really key in my opinion. Standard/Free membership will allow you to access virtually all areas of the forum apart from specific areas reserved for paying premium members.
You will get access to the buy/sell sections but all new posts are hidden to non-paying members for 3 days, this allows all Premium members (Silver/Gold/Platinum/Platinum Plus) members to have the first option to buy the listed items, which is one of the main benefits of becoming a premium member. The money you will save on deals on here will cover your membership fees after your first few purchases.
You can still list items for sale as a free non-paying member but you're limited to one post every 30 days. Having a paid membership will allow you to list multiple items for sale, and also take advantage of other people's sales posts as soon as they're listed.
Other benefits to being a paid member include things like being able to attach images to messages and allows you to join in with reactions to other members content such as like, love, lol, thanks etc etc.
Whether you're buying or selling a paid membership is definitely the way to go.
I have been a member of this forum for almost 2 years but only within the last couple of months have I started stacking more seriously so I upgraded my membership, but I honestly wish I had done it sooner.
Good luck with your stacking journey and welcome to The Silver Forum 👍

Ah, ok... I have seen some coins with "troy oz" marked on them. That completely slipped my mind when I was weighing them.
I am leaning towards "not gonna' worry about it."
    Thanks for all the replies.

If they are from a reputable dealer then don't worry too much.
The weight is fine, although as you say kitchen scales aren't likely to be especially accurate, but an ounce, in precious metal terms is a troy ounce, which is 31.1g
Also, silver is soft (relatively) so scratches and dings are not unusual for bullion.
That said  if you're not happy then by all means consider asking for a refund/exchange, but a previously said, I'm not sure this would be entertained by the dealer.

    Hi all,
So, I think I've been bitten by the silver bug. I made a bit of an impulsive purchase of four 1 oz Rounds from a site I randomly happened upon. They're from a small private mint and I'm happy with what I got for generic rounds, but one of the coins has some... blemishes, I guess you could call them?
On the reverse, the left side (maybe 20%) of the coin has a slightly different, lighter/smoother finish that leaves a visible line running downwards in front of the eagle.
And then there's a small ding/gouge right alongside the Mint Mark.
Are these things I should be concerned about? Is it worth bothering the dealer for a return/replacement for the one coin? For me, this is one of those, "Now that I know it's there, I can't NOT see it."
I was able to determine they're made by OZ Mint, in Utah. https://oz-mint.com/
