2017 UK Bicentenary Piedfort Sovereign

Got home and thought I would check the sovereigns which arrived today before I send them to Numistacker.

All three have marks.

Gutted.

One has a circle in the horses tail

One has a mark on the guys cheek

And one has a mark on the guys cloak..all hard to see with the naked eye.

Think I will exchange them and see what they send me next.. probably someone else's returns.

I wonder what would be the best thing to do.

If you can't live with the flaws (they are proofs after all) then when you send them back how can you be sure of getting good coins?  If you then have to ask for a refund then you might feel like you had missed out.

Does anyone have experience of this, bearing in mind that when coins get older we seem to accept blemishes a bit more easily?

I suppose the best outcome would be for these premium coins to be examined and declared flawless proof prior to the customer receiving them.

Any thoughts?

I do think it depends. I think many collectors want that PF70 and they know these are the sort of marks that make a coin a 69 - 68.
That means the extra money put in may not have been worth it.

This breaks my heart.

I didn't buy these but I'm so disappointed in the Mint.

It's simply not good enough. It is an £800 proof coin :(

Yeah I normally don't check my coins just send them straight for grading but something told me to check.. definitely wouldn't get a 70.

Paying £800 for a tiny coin I would expect it to be perfect..might just send them back and buy another 35th panda

Completely agree, its not good enough for such a high premium, don't these coins go through major checks being how "special" there meant to be?

An interesting debate - I don't have any experience of grading, would the gouge on the tail make it a 69, to me that is a pretty heavy mark on the coin, whereas the one on the cloak is lighter.

For £800 as @Roy  says what is acceptable?  If you do end up with a refund rather than a replacement is it the fear of missing out that influences your decision?

Well all we can do is wait and see. At least we have thrown up a debate that may have consequences for the Mint.
When I spoke to the Mint about returning my coins I also raised the subject of inadequate mail packaging for a premium product.
Apparently the Mint are looking at their packaging due to "feedback" - mmmmm.
My returned coins will arrive at the Mint tomorrow. I sent them advanced pictures of the tail and had a reply within the hour.
I am sorry to hear that at least one other coin has the dreaded "ring tail" but I am sure there are more out there.
If you slab a coin then there is no comeback from the Mint if it comes back PF68 or PF69.
If the Mint can get so many PF70's on the 2017 Proof, then as the surface area and design on the Piedfort is the same, then surely the percentages should be the similar on the Piedfort - time will tell.

This whole series was ill-conceived.

The advertising was wrong. The COAs were wrong. Neither coin made sense, a Piedfort Sov and a rimless non-legal tender SOTD token?

Ugly or not, a Britannia is a Britannia.

Good question. I first thought it was a copper spot but those develop over time. Seeing it on three piedforts now it seems to be a die error (a rust spot that transfers and blooms on the gold?)

Now is that a rare error or just ugly? Likely NCS should be able to remove that (for a fee) but the lack of frosting can definitely not be repaired.

Hard to tell from the pics what's the coin and what's capsule

But maybe the replacements were ones other people had sent back

I would send them back and keep going. Send ever demanding emails and start to suggest you will contact their superiors at The Mint if this poor service continues. There is a list of hierarchy on the Mint website. Keep going. Make them concede, not you, otherwise nothing will ever change. Persistent determination. Or, get a refund on two and keep going with one but dont give in.

I just took a few moments to contrast the mood now to when these coins were launched.  What a great excitement!

To be very generous, there is quite a bit disconnect between what some of us expected and what we ended up with.

It goes without saying that I am highly delighted for those who got great 2017 coins - and I share the pain, on a personal level, with those who ended up with a great disappointment.

I would say, though, that I learned a lot, and in the long run that will be the best investment of all.

Agreed. Making money is easy, as easy as losing money.

You may get rich with cryptos but that's not enough, you have to preserve it :)
