Ignoring a user question

[username] is the only poster on my ignore list. Became a member and immediately started aggravating behaviour here, not with the debate but with the inferred rudeness to members. Be warned  

 

@ChrisSilver any chance of including quoted comments of ignored posters in with the ignore feature? Otherwise, it is kind of hard to ignore them.

Do you mean some quotes of the ignored users on the ignored users page so you can see why you ignored them? You can click on the avatar of an ignored user in the ignored lost and it will take you to their profile where you can see their activity of posts and read there. Or do I miss understand your question?

Ah, do you mean that you have a user on your ignore list but when other members quote that member than you can see what the user who you ignored had written? That wouldn't be so simple to do, as I presume it would require real time scaning of all forum posts to that are made (which would slow down the forum) searching for quoted members who were on each users invididual ignore list and then hiding this, and I am not even sure it's possible to hide parts of a post without hiding the whole post itself.

If there is ever a way to be able to do it, It would be appreciated. Otherwise, I guess I just have to live with it even though it detracts from my enjoyment of this wonderful site. Pity.

It would require custom work, which I already have some other custom work for other improvements in the queue.

But the main problem is they this sort of implementation would use up a lot of system resources to run such a search and would heavily slow down the forum, so it doesn't make any sense unfortunately.

Ignoring a user is quite easy as it is just ignoring all posts from that specific user. But ignoring quoted messages isn't as simple to do as it would mean all posts, after the submit reply button was pressed, would have to be scanned for quoted messages and all words compared to a database of member names, and then compared against a list of which members have ignored which users, if there was a match found the system would then have to either hide part of the post, which doesn't make sense s you may miss information in this post that wasn't related to the quoted ignored users, or part of the post itself would have to have some code inserted to hide it for you.

Furthermore, once any user changes their ignore settings, then all past forum posts would have to be scanned again. There is currently over 88,000 posts.

I have submitted your suggestion as product feedback to the forum software developer but I don't think it will be possible as such implementation would be huge on resources and doesn't make any logical sense in terms of how the programming works. Luckily there is the possibility to ignore members actual posts, as with a lot of other forums this isn't even possible.
