$5 Liberty Head Gold Coin - Should I get it Graded?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I picked up this gold Liberty Head $5 at the London coin fair for only a few % over spot - it was a great deal and the more I look at it the more I am thinking about getting it graded.

I have some high resolution photos here - can you more experienced graders have a look and advise if it is worth it? I would like it to achieve an MS grade for it to be worth sending off.

I am a complete novice when it comes to coin grading and I don't know what constitutes an MS grade for this type of coin.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Mintage : 939,000

On pictures looks that it has some/lots of original lustre but it's somewhat dull. Maybe because of photograph angle or because some other "reason", its hard to tell without handling it in person. If it's authentic and problem free it could be profitable if it gets any MS grade.

@Numistacker 's your man, he's probably got lots of these graded so will be able to give you a good opinion. It looks pretty good to me except for the scuffing on the head truncation and the black marks on the obverse with possible scuffing on the arrow heads. If I had to guess, I would say it should reach 60

Not sure if this year is valuable, most 20th century US gold coins aren't worth much more than bullion. I haven't got my book with me.
