20 franc Leopold ii Belgium gold coin

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking a gold coin to keep for many year. My interest is the gold itself.

I am looking into buying some gold coins and while the Krugerrand, Britannia and Sovereigns are very interesting they have a huge premium.

I found the 20 franc Leopold ii Belgium gold coin that have lower premium. Is this a good coin in gold terms?

The link to the coin https://www.coininvest.com/en/gold-coins/belgian-francs/20-franc-leopold-ii-belgium-gold-1865-1909/

Thanks

It is a fine looking coin and if you like this kind of coin then go for it.

If it is the cheapest bullion you are looking for then probably best to look at one of the following dealers in the UK. You will pay less in postage and also a lot less due to the exchange rate which is not in your favour buying a Euro priced coin.

The Belgium coin is 5.81g gold for £195.27 = £1045/oz

A basic sovereign from Hatton Garden metals is 7.32g gold for £247.78 = £1052/oz

So a sovereign is only a bit more. Not sure where you are getting the idea there is a big premium on basic sovereigns and Krugerrands because generally there isn't. You are looking at spot plus 3% for a sovereign and spot plus 2% for a Krugerrand from HGM. If you are simply looking for gold i would advise the sovereign.

The Krugerrand is a shade cheaper ounce for ounce but there is no capital gains tax on the sovereign unlike the Krugerrand, if that were ever something to trouble you and you would probably find it would be easier to sell privately in the UK with the sovereign being such a well recognised and popular coin.

The 20 franc coins are lovely.  There are plenty of designs to keep you interested and some have great historical stories behind them.  After sovereigns they're my favourite.

i bought a few from coin invest over the years.  They're an easy company to deal with but if I was you I'd buy more than 1 item as the postage isn't cheap.

Does Coininvest have a service where you can buy a coin, they will store it for you and then send it with a subsequent order?

The cost of shipping a single coin would add the best part of 10% to the price and certainly make the sovereign the better deal.

you are able to buy in GBP, USD and EUR with us - no need to pay in EUR - we are very customer friendly and postage is quick, quicker than other dealers - just because we have huge stock which others don't have.
