Popjoy 1977 Isle of Man Gold Proof Sovereigns.

Hi, I picked up a 1977 Isle of Man Gold Proof Sovereign Four Coin set.

This purchase was driven only based on the intrinsic gold value, not its numismatic value as I tend to stick to bars - the price was to good to miss.

I don't know much about Pobjoy or where it sits on desirability/collectable scale. The coa says only 1250 minted. The whole set looks flawless.

Does anyone know much about these sets?

(I must say it is a bit more satisfying than just buying bars, I can see how people get into numismatic side.)

Thanks.

The price is out of date.

The Isle of Man will not be using Pobjoy after this year [i think] - no actual reason given.

Thank you. Nearly 2oz of gold I paid less than that price. The problem is with these set is that they are a bit messy when it comes to resale.

Do you think these Pobjoy sets will potentially go up in value as they are not minting now?

"Do you think these Pobjoy sets will potentially go up in value as they are not minting now?"

This is an Isle of Man set using Pobjoy to mint the coins. So it depends on how good the mint is that is contracted to product further coins and whether there is a change in coins. As a guess i would not think it will make an appreciable difference. What will make the difference to the selling price will be the price of gold, for as you say the set is nearly 2oz of gold.

I think most people who collect sovs would like to have the IOM variations.

The problem with sets in general is that they are an expensive purchase for many collectors.

I.e. Keep the 1/10 and 1/4 but flog the bigger size as bullion. I have the same issue with Britannia sets I have bought in the past but will follow this method

“Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Oscillate Wildly
