I have to ask other guys here, who are longer in this than me: is this grading thing (among others) kind of addictive or what...? ?

I have found myself looking among my other coins, to think what I could potentially send for grading (except the ones I usually do)!

Spot the mechanical error

Thanks to Numistacker this error is now rectified.

Curious that it is the larger gold coin that has a £5 face value (but it follows the specs of a five sovereign) while the 1/4 coin follows the spec of Britannias.

Hicccc - Like a good Gin and Tonic - once you've had one good one ............................

Until June last year, although I had bought some graded coins, about 30% of my collection was graded - now after this next lot it's nearly 70%.

Will I get to 100% - no way as I don't generally get my Proof or Modern (post 1979) coins graded.

Now where's my SA Membership Card - Slabbing Anonymous!!

Just watch the edges of the coins please - the gold doesn't seem to stick to well to Milled Edges.  Also keep well clear of magnets and Speakers!!

Another result was announced yesterday and I wanted to talk about this one specially.

I bought a New Zealand Kiwi coin shaped like an egg at the Great Collections Auction as a NGC PF 68

egg3.thumb.jpg.037c4bc03ae4459bf8adf111a0a0e8cc.jpg

As you can see it looked less than perfect and it had no real interest at the auction despite the low mintage of 500 coins. This coin is an @augur favourite and I really only noticed this because he had previously sent coins in for grading. I paid $355 for the coin plus 10% buyers fee (for a cash payment) and I believed that NCS could make this coin as great as it could be. NCS conservation is $28 and so the investment in this coin was

egg4.jpg.7c6354034f0ec8a25afa6f3ac3eed211.jpg

$390 plus $28 so a total of $418.

The coin was sold out at the New Zealand Post office a little after release and mintage is only 500. The mint price for a coin was $845 NZ$ (£442 and US$586.77)

egg5.jpg.415613604180a198fff2aaef7a3330f5.jpg

After conservation the coin achieved PF70

egg1.jpg.304eaffa277d488b76db5992e95f1c2f.jpg

egg2.jpg.9edb055248086f4d79ed110387368c57.jpg

How much is the coin worth as a PF70? Your guess is as good as mine....

I wanted to show you this as a worked example as it is quite interesting to see the story played out. Net price mint raw less $150 and outcome from grading and conservation probably mint + 40% (but unknown)

$390 is a great price for any gold kiwi! The mintage has come down to a very healthy 500 and only connoisseurs are able to pick them up on release.

Well spotted! Your were able to work the fact that the US market doesn't appreciate anything below 70 (and probably that the attendees weren't very knowledgeable about gold kiwis) very well to your favour. And NCS has laid a nice golden egg for your birthday ?

Well done as many of the coins of the great spotted kiwi are, well, spotted. Maybe you want to ask NGC no to correct the spelling from greated to great!

Not worth loosing the grade (MS65) of the 1914S  Sovereign for crossing over to NGC. Might attempt to conserve with PCGS before having another go.

Anyone with a PCGS account on here who is planning on restoring a batch of coins?
