Any thing to do with metal detecting, and magnet fishing!!!!

I do not own a metal detector now but used to have one eons ago, but still do like the idea.

I do have a very very strong neodymium magnet and I go fishing with that. Last catch was one of the old cast iron by way signs worth a bit on eBay but I just sat it at the side of the footpath.

You also get the newer coins as these are magnetic.

The magnets we have are about 6-7cm diameter and will pick up if on a flat horizontal surface I think between 150-200 lbs or so . They cost about £20 inc P&P when we bought them.

You will be very surprised what you find at the bottom of ponds!!!

Just in local rivers and lakes.

Went a few years ago, and then my last trip home in May this year.

My eldest son has had a full BMX he gave that to a couple of young lads who were watching him.

We have had around £2-£4 in coins.

@A_A

I have spoken to my son and that is the store first4magnets, however the one we bought a couple of years ago is not there, that said there are some very similar.

I would go for this one unless you want a bit more pulling power and also always get the screw in eye NOT the hook as your line may slip off.

I use 100kg nylon washing line (Water proof), my son uses 550 paracord. None have snapped yet!!

Have fun!!!

I have a Garrett 350, and a Garrett 1500, use both on beach. Pick up 400-500 euros every year ( about 4 trips). Great hobby and exercise . There illegal here, so less competition for pickings

Thanks keithoil, got impatient and ended up buying a smaller one before anyone replied, same type though with the eye screwed in. Will give it a go when it arrives and if it's too weak will get that one too. This one will be alright for small stuff I reckon

Didn't think of washing line, great idea, was wondering about climbing rope but imagined it would get heavy and smelly after dragging it through the river a couple of times. Looking forward to it!

Had my first go today with my small magnet, it's not really big enough to pick up anything decent, and it was a bit light so didn't always sink right away. Didn't get much, lots of nails and rust crumbs, but I think I got a machine gun bullet tip from WWII

Looking forward to getting a bigger magnet and having a proper go

  • 3 weeks later...

There are some nice videos on Youtube about magnet fishing, there basically doing it for scrap metal, but scrap metal = money money= silver.I live near a canal and have thought about giving it ago but the stuff coming out the canal is black and smelly.so would have to be dried off before you could get rid of it.
