Today I bought.....

Recommended Posts

It's a bit of a dilemma for me as I like both. I believe the mintage on the panda is 600 000 and could bring a good return in years to come but a good sovereign always holds its value doesn't it?

Decisions decisions.....

Sovereigns are generally pretty common and the pandas will be pretty common too. 600,000 is a lot but 1/4oz pandas do seem to vanish more quickly than most. I think both the 8g panda and the shield are premium but if you can find an unc shield for circ money then that's a good buy at today's prices.

At £260 these shields are by far the best buy at the moment. They are trading at the same prices as they were when gold was £100/oz or even £200 cheaper.

If gold drops again, I've no doubt they'll hold their value. If gold rises, the price of these coins will have to go up as well.

Absolutely agree. Ive been watching shields on eBay being sold for about the same amount pre the recent gold rise.

There appears to be a more gradual rise and low with shields. Making them a good stable investment in my opinion.

1872 London is a common year and a little more worn than you'd like. Only 6.7% premium on spot at the moment though:)

As Steve said it's a common year and not in the greatest of condition, id say it's on the higher end of what you would want to pay generally, I would have guessed it was worth around £225 a couple of weeks ago, but compared to spot atm it the price you paid seems very reasonable

@prophet800 there is a very good thread on sovereigns in the premium members section that might interest you. Started by the aptly named @sovereignsteve ?

Funnily enough, I came by that name when my mate who was merely a coin collecting acqaintance at the time, had me as "sovereignsteve" in his mobile phone.:D

Is that not almost a 1/10th

Looks like a good price

Its just under, I think I paid under spot landed.

A guy was selling on eBay, it looked fake due to the camera angle. I dropped the guy a line and he said he was more than happy to refund me if I didn't like it and he had no issues with it as he had bought it from a Jewellers. Diameter is right and weight was dead on so pretty chuffed with it.

Its not for sale though, I lived in Holland twice and always have loved the the 5 and 10 Gulden.

It's that "Libertad pre-order" season , where you pay now and hope to see a nice proof coin sometime later?

Bought two 5 ounce Mexican Libertad silver proofs from a US dealer. $200 each for US delivery...I dare not calculate the premium over spot on these beauties. However, they are as safe an investment you can make in my opinion, value goes up every subsequent year (with the assumption that the Mexican mint has not fooled us all and tripled the production?!).
