Fractional gold....coins or bars??

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

Recently started stacking silver and gold

Had originally planned to get a couple sovereigns each month in addition to my silver purchases

Problem is after getting my 1st sov I'm just not feeling the love, there close to spot and easy to liquidate but the colour just doesn't do it for me

I like a lot of the 1/4 coins especially the perth mint stuff but they all have high premiums

I love the look of the perth mint 10-20g bars but am abit wary seeing as there sealed in assay cards

You can pickup 10g bars for £25 per gram which is on par with sovs price wise

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Yeah had a look at them

Here's the part where I'm really anal,I dont really like used coins either

And the ocd part where I will probably order another sov so I have a pair ;)

Guess the question I should have asked was does anyone see a problem buying small bars?

10g + bars from HGM are priced at +4%. They will be "used" obviously and you will not know who makes them until you receive them . I have not bought any small bars there but would imagine most will still be in their original packaging. Anything under this weight is +8% which is odd as even half sovs at 4g are +4%. Watch out for specials at Atkinsons also. If you go down the bar route I do not see much premium added to them down the line, unlike panda, lunar etc. but if you just want clean, golden bullion!

it all depends on your investment strategy.

overall, cgt free coins like sovereigns are

better value at the same premium. (maybe

some buyers won't care about cgt free, but

some buyers will)

if you're preferred choice is new, it could be

a long wait for coin specific premiums to

accumulate.

I still believe that for monthly buys for the long

term, sovereigns are the way to go.(economically)

That can't be a current price, surely?

And proofs for less than unc?

To be truthful when I bought my first sovereign a few years back I was also distinctly underwhelmed and was not wowed by them in a big way,

£225 back then for something the size of a 1p was not a fair swap in my eyes !

However with time & experience they have grown on me in a big way and now the pros outweigh the cons to them to owning sovereigns.

The major plus for them in my eyes is the 'price point', it is just perfect for me, it not too dear to miss the cash in a massive way, and also so it doesn't really feel like a major purchase.

That £100 or £200 you would have otherwise frittered away on a fancy meal, night out on the drink, a few lucky spins on roulette, new pair of trainers/jeans you didn't really need

With it being not too expensive,a sovereign it is not really classed as a major purchase in my eyes (ie compared to say a 1oz gold Britannia £700+)

add the more than agreeable buyers premium of 3-5% which you dont get with other small fractional bullion coins/bars, guaranteed buy back of 98%, a good local supplier where i can buy cash and no postage/delivery issues

Loose money you have sat kicking its heals once your bills are paid for the month I will happily spend on a full sovereign or half sovereign with that spare cash.

Once these here and there spare cash sovereign purchases become regular you are very quick too accumulate a decent chunk of gold without really trying

Add to the mix, a decent lucky 15 bet comes in has bought a good few of mine, a poker tournament final table/win has bought a few more, the weekend overtime I did I didn't really want to do has netted a few more.  Little apples are sweet, slow and steady :)

Also, if i ever might be in a wee pickle and may ever need a quick £200 fast, I'm not attached enough to any sovereign emotionally to cash it in to meet my needs, a sovereign is a sovereign in my eyes.

The sovereign is the best coin for a UK stacker to have as their core gold holding

Buy what lights your candle or your get bored,if you don't like it later either stack and forget it for a rainy day or off load and re-buy what tickles your fancy later, all our choices change in this game it moves with time.

Keep the sovereign put it away and buy one of something else and see where it takes you.

Anything smaller than a 10g "bar" looks pathetic in my opinion. Buying from a dealer, the 10g bars are affordable and there is a fair amount of variety if all you want is sheer weight of gold. 20g or 1oz bars are far more satisfying but you'd start to notice the hole in the pocket as you buy the larger weights. If there was a variety of 1/4oz bars, I'd happily buy some if they are cheaper than the same weight in coins.

I find a sovereign fits nicely into the gap between a 5g and 10g bar, and will cost no more than going out for a (very) nice meal, so I'm happy to pick one up now and then. I have no interest in collecting gold coins so I'm happy to buy cheap whatever shape it comes in.

I like coins and bars but have only ended up with a single sovereign so far. Although I'm only stacking cheap ounces I like a bit of variety if possible so have tended to prefer looking at 20 Francs, of which I have a small collection now. A couple of these or a 10g bar now and then is an agreeable amount to fork out.

Excellent advice guys

Re: Paul's comments

Everything you said was the reason I chose sovereigns in the 1st place, they make perfect sense

Just hard to see myself spending ££££'s on something I'm not overly keen on

Much prefer that Matte buttery gold colour of Perth stuff

There are many comments I could make after reading about someone deciding on a investment strategy solely on the colour shading of a piece of gold.

However I'm just going  to sit here shaking my head instead.

Smaller bars do not seem to have much demand, there are enough members here that I am pretty sure you could sell several 1oz coins for spot +1-3% and have buyers quickly. The forum has created a more liquid market for coins and given members the option to sell for better prices than if they sold directly to dealers.

I remember one member trying to sell some 5g gold bars, and there wasn't much interest at all. All of the fractional coins seem to have been purchased though, as long as the pice was right.

The panda coins might have higher premiums, but I am sure you can get most of that premium back when you come to sell. If you sell on the forum.

I think an older panda coin sold at the same price of the current year panda coin will sell extremely quickly on the forum. So they are worth a consideration in my eyes, as long as everyone here doesn't adopt this same strategy :)
