Gold low premium

Ive been told by multiple stackers that its best to start with atleast 100 oz of silver before starting gold, what is the reasoning of this? Also is it ok to jump into low amounts of gold if you can get for spot or a very very low premium like $2 over gold spot? I was able to pick up three 1/25th oz coins for spot recently just couldnt pass it up is this ok?

I think the reason people advise to stack 100 oz of silver before gold is probably to get you into stacking slowly. Silver is much cheaper then gold, so making a few mistakes on your first few oz of silver might cost you $20. Making similar mistakes with gold will cost you a few hundred $.

I think you've done well picking up fractional gold at spot. Just make sure you're not over-stretching yourself financially bud.

It's so they can sell you theirs. Greater fool and all that.

Don't waste your money, stick with gold. Any weight will do as long as the premium is low or/and the collectibility is high.

All IMHO of course, and welcome to the forum 😊

Hi @Newbiestacker9486 some of the reasons have been given for starting with 100oz of silver, in my opinion gold is gold as others have said but yes silver cheaper and seriously discounted at the moment IMHO and to build 100oz stack of silver would mean that should it play catch up to gold and the GSR (gold silver ratio) comes back to its historic average of 40 45 ish then for half of your 100oz silver stack you could straight swap to 1oz of gold  :) cheep gold in the future when it's price may be even hire but the silver has played catch up :)

I appreciate your response i totally get it. Im here in Australia and my local coin shop has bad for silver most of the time thats one reason i went for gold. I can order silver online from a bullion dealer and have it sent to embassy i guess just would rather in person if i can. I like stacking eagles so maybe next time ill just order a tube of eagles

I vote this.

(gold is flexible, silver takes time, lots of time)

Yeah i can see how silver takes a long long time. Silver fits my budget a little better right now, but when i bought the gold i had some extra cash (more than normal). Not enough to get a 1/4 oz or more but enough to get me started into gold

At spot those three coins were a bargain. Seen them go as high as 20% over spot. Super cute coins

Yeah my coin guy had two or three more should have snagged them. Literally sold them to me right at spot, might go back and see what kind of deal i can strike up on the others

When I started stacking here in the UK I read a lot about starting with silver but having done serious amount of calculations I worked out how much silver I would need to buy buy to make it viable and worthwhile and realised I could very quickly by a sensible amount of gold for the same price with a lot less stacking storage issues and and at spot price when I was buying immediately made money on my investment

This was my first gold and from everyones feed back i feel like i did it right, little to no premium and got a product that is seriously worth more than i paid. If i continue to find deals like tgis I dont think ill have an issue. I like both silver and gold so ill probably continue to stack both, but i wont lie those little gold coins sure are pretty 😍😍😍

You stack what you want!  If you are a stacker then stack near spot! Do not get sucked into special coins.  Think about how are you going to sell when it is time to sell?  And yes silver is a long term game some of us bought silver a long time ago and still are not showing a profit.

I started out buying 1/25s too. Although mine didn’t have those premiums lol. I suspect you could easily trade those for more gold.

I personally started with silver as I dident have the finances in place for gold. Slowly bought silver and then traded up to gold. I've kept this pattern going and now own about 50/50 in value of both. Whilst stacking silver I learnt alot about gold so worked for me. I dident have 100oz when started selling to finance gold though. I tend to stay with fractional gold from 1/10 to 1/4oz. What ever works for u buddy. And welcome to tbe forum.

Personally I would not start with silver just because of the VAT in the U.K.

I would start with Full Sovs and close to spot as possible.  Save up and get one, then the next.

Just my thoughts having been collecting for longer than I like to remember!

Just for the record, I do still collect silver but really only coins that I like - mostly Morgan Dollars that I will never make my money back on!
