Leaving the EU - SOTD Sovereign

Did anyone else get this email? - I got three!

Marking the United Kingdom's Withdrawal from the European Union

On 31 January 2020, a new 50p coin observing the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union will be released. The coin will be available as gold and silver Proof editions, as well as a Brilliant Uncirculated edition and as part of a two-coin historic set. In addition, a number of gold Sovereigns will be struck on the day and these particular coins will feature a portcullis privy mark.

I’m super interested - even know I always miss out on SOTD - but I wanted to read others thoughts as the SOTD seem to do well, but 31st Jan release does feel a bit gimmicky.

I just saw the design for the 50p lol I will get that a miss

The sovereign is interesting depending on mintage

Yeah, not a of the 50p myself. Looks more like a 10 minute photoshop job, with 9 minutes spent choosing the font.

If struck on the day, the max they can do is about, what, 750 or so. I will not be chasing this one. For hard core sovereign collectors only and flippers.

The good news is that me not being interested now guarantees a successful coin !

1817 x 2017 SOTD Sovs old boy 👍

Got an 1817 and the 2017 5 coin set (ungraded), piedford PF70, sotd 70s x 2, and 5 sov msdpl70...covered myself there ;)

I recall you buying the lot! 😀

This Sov sounds interesting. The date is significant (SOTD) and the imagery/message of the Portcullis is delicious 😂

The sotds are really being pushed hard now after the success of the 2017 sovereigns and now come with initials and privies over the last year or so, and now a portcullis. Good luck to those prepared to stump up probably £500+ for a another one but it is not for me. I am sticking with my boring bullion purchases for the foreseeable future.

I think the date is of significance to British people and so the market will be there and flippers of course (include dealers).

I dont think anyone else gives a toss. Will be an interesting coin 100 years from now.

Going in hard core on the disinterest so as to really ramp up the success for everyone who goes for it :)

Some good points there. I’m going for it. I’m generally pretty unlucky with getting the SOTD and normally just end up ranting about the flippers 😂

I can't find any info on the brexit Sov, is it best to contact the mint or do they go on sale on their website on the day? Does anyone have a link? Im very green re numismatics.

It’s a bit of a lottery. Sometimes they really build hype especially if it’s something that will appeal to the masses. I’m guessing they haven’t marketed it because Boris didn’t sign the Brexit documents until this weekend and it’s now a bit more of a safer bet. I’d imagine the Mint will start their marketing campaign from Monday.

Generally however for the SOTD, the information comes from from marketing emails well before they’re on the website.

Go to the royal mint website. Type Brexit in theIr search bar and you’ll find their 50p and info on the Sov with a notification form you can use if you are not already signed up for their updates.

I will be going for the SOTD as I collect them. It’s interesting that to date the SOTD coins have been linked to key events linked to the Queen or the Royal family. This is the first with no direct royal family connection.

Abit stupid really but then it is a rush job :) Also the SOTD will most likely be done in high numbers.

The 50p etc was on the news to.

But the 50p design has been the same since October... shouldn't be a surprise factor? Still on the fence with the SOTD sov. Tempted just out of principle 🤫
