Hello,

Keep getting told that Silver should be as big a stack as Gold, so here I am.

Hate the VAT thing for starters, just saying.

Saw an advert here for Junk silver, 1/2 dollars, seemed a reasonable spot price.  What are the best ways to ensure that the Silver I receive is Silver?

Gold Sovereigns are easy, right size, right mass, job done.  Tungsten won't stamp into a coin, no way, no how..

Is there an infallible Silver test for random coinage?

Cheers,

RS

Feel a little guilty even being here as I have little to offer and only questions to offer.

Wouldn't feel guilty, we all have to learn somewhere and sometime. There is plenty to read and see here though, you’ll soon get up to speed and find the answers you need :)

In answer to your original post, VAT is a pain but there are ways round that. You can buy from here on the forum or through goldsilver.be, silver to go or the European Mint VAT free.

Tests for ‘random coinage’ not that I know of without spending a fair bit on some electronics! That’s not to say there isn’t another way.

I tend to be a "cash" person, don't have much truck with digital.  I also deem un-held metals to be "worthless".

It annoys me that my bank asks why I want to withdraw my own money.  I now have a standard "Hookers and Blow in Amsterdam", but this annoys the wife a little.

Yours,

RS

Tungsten’s density is virtually the same as gold.

Yes, but I believe it is too brittle to stamp into coins, that is why I choose Sovereigns, if it is the right dimensions and mass, it's Gold.

Has anything official ever come out about Tungsten Gold?  You here it mentioned often enough, but has any one had any definitive proof?

I’m in the same boat as you which is why I buy sovereigns over gold bars. You’ve got nothing to worry about with gold coins as long as you buy from reputable dealers. I would steer clear from eBay unless it’s a reputable eBay seller you’re buying from. A fake coin is easier to detect than a fake bar. Nothing official is ever issued about counterfeit gold-plated tungsten bars because it would cause investors to panic and be a huge embarrassment to the world’s gold refineries. However, fake bars do turn up in the commodity exchanges as this news report back in 2010 shows. Not surprisingly, the news story on YouTube has been blocked: http://news.coinupdate.com/largest-private-refinery-discovers-gold-plated-tungsten-bar-0171/

Welcome. There are some tests you can do at home like using a rare earth magnet or a specific gravity test. But your best bet is buying from a reputable dealer in the first place. You can avoid VAT on silver by buying from Europe.

There's a lot of information on the forum that can help though. Don't forget, you can always ask questions if you're unsure of something.

Welcome!

Plenty of places offering VAT free silver...

You’ll find that similar to gold sovereigns, weights and dimensions are your friends when spotting counterfeit. It’s not as prevalent in the silver bullion coin market, simply down to value I presume. It doesn’t take long for you to build up enough experience to confidently identify a coin that needs further investigation, just like with sovereigns.

A good tip is to trawl the Chinese online marketplaces, you can see what coins are being produced on mass, Kew Gardens 50p is very popular.

Best of luck, any help please ask!

Many thanks, Elliot
