Gold In The Hole !

Found this lovely hammered gold a while back on a very windy day while out metal detecting. I decided to take cover from the high winds and walk in the shelter of a near by hedge . Thought I would share the pictures with you 😃 

Can any eagle eyed coin collectors recognize the coin in the hole ? I will post another picture later

A quick wash under running water and it came out like this 😀 a James 1st Quarter Laurel 1619 ….

Wow what a find. You might search a lifetime and never find such treasure. 
Imagine how sick the loser was on discovering their coin had slipped their grasp.

Yes to loose a Quarter Laurel would have been very sickening at the time not many people even had silver pennies in their pockets . It must have been someone who had wealth. Here is the reverse side .

Having a look at recent previous auctions when they do come up for sale these often go for over £300. 

Beside that they are rare and a nice bit of history, congratulations on your find.

I tried to find more by searching every inch of the area 😃 there was only modern bits of rubbish. If there is any more they might be down a bit deeper or under the hedge

Many thanks for sharing the photographs - it is remarkable to find such a treasure and piece of history.

The wonderful thing is that the coin will be in much the same condition that it was in the day it was dropped or buried.

I am a keen student and part time collector of treasure wreck coins and I hope you got as much pleasure and excitement finding this coin as have those who have found similar maritime treasures!
