Adding a Friend

I`v recently been fortunate enough to have recieved an "Added as Friend" thingy.

but I don`t know to add them (or even if I have to now that its done and accepted), but just supose I wanted to add someone that hadn`t already added me, How would I go about doing that?

Hi Fluttershy,

Click on their profile. You can do this by clicking their avatar (display picture) then to the left of the "send me a message" button, there is a button "add me as a friend"

What benefits (or otherwise) ensue by being a "friend" of someone?

I had 3 I think on the previous software but all I could see was an icon at the top informing me they were online.

It used to show you when your friends are online and what they are doing, e.g. If you were my friend and you were online and you were browsing topic *, it would say 'sovereignsteve is browsing topic *' But this no longer exists.

Instead members can follow other members, to do this go to the members profile page you wish to follow and click 'Follow member' then click 'follow this' shown in the screenshot below.

You can change your notification settings to turn on or off email and or inline notifications for members that you follow. You can choose to receive notifications if they update their status and/or if they post new content on the forum. See screenshots below of notification settings relating to members you follow.

To get to the notification settings, either click on the 'Change how the notification is sent' shown in the above screenshot before you follow someone, the 2nd setting relating to following members content will be highlighted so it is easier to find. (Don't forget to then return to press the 'follow this' button on the members page you wish to follow) or you can click the notification icon on the top right and click 'notification settings'

 

Unlike the old friends system you do not automatically follow back people who follow you, and you can actually receive notifications when your friends post something. The new system is a bit like how you follow people on twitter.

Thanks @ChrisSilver (see I can do it now) although the Twitter reference is wasted on me, I wouldn't go near it on principle.
