Where do you buy your sovereigns?

I've never owned a sovereign before. Where do you fine folk of The Silver Forum tend to pick up your sovs?

Any preferred dealers where you can get a decent price but be reasonably confident on quality? I'm not looking for numismatic value as prefer to keep to low premiums where possible, but also would prefer to avoid heavily worn or dinged coins. My very limited prior purchases (not sovs) have always been new coins.

Was thinking about using one of these (I can avoid postage by collecting on these ones as well), but guessing it's a complete gamble on what shows up;

Use both, both fine. HGM can be a lottery on condition, 90% of coins are fine. Had a Krug that had some ribs ground off (presumably for testing). A real mix of dates and heads, which is fine for me, but not always recent dates.

They are a 30 second stroll from each other. If HGM are marginally better on price, go there, if the coins are not perfect, walk around the corner to Bairds. Likely new or recent coins.

Atkinson's fine too. But not in London, if you want to shop in person.

H&B have a deal on, but online only. You have to deal with the junk mail that follows though.

Bought 3 from Harrington & Byrne when they were selling below spot.

All the rest right here, from the good people of TSF - Buy & Sell. :)

Good shout. I was planning to do exactly that earlier, but BYB alerted me to their data privacy policy which put me off a bit. Probably overly cautious, but at the same time I think it's a pretty irresponsible policy and perhaps they need to lose some business because of it! 😮

I was wondering about this. If I go into HGM can I buy at the "best value sovereign" price but see the coins in advance?

I kind of assumed, quite probably wrongly, that you wouldn't be able to view unless you're paying for their slightly higher premium sovs. Which may well be worth it for some forum members, but I wouldn't know a special coin/date if it hit me between the eyes! 😄

Tbh I dont know that you can....as such.

But when they bring them out, you can see them and say you dont want them, if they are tatty.

I think the sovs I've had from there have been ok. A Brit was quite old, but ok condition, but a Krug looked like it had been tested by having the edge ground off.

Only been to Bairds once, last week. Nice showroom, with lots of shiny stuff in it. Got a couple of Brits, they got what they had out, was all 2017, which as I wasn't looking for specific years, it was fine. But as they had 2020 on their website, hoped to get them. Was told if I'd called ahead, they would have got them from their other site, or could have them there the following morning.

At that time, they were lower cost than HGM, so couldn't go wrong.

Those 2 are ideal for me. A few minutes from Farringdon.

You can also pop into Sharps Pixley when you're in London. Decent prices and will go through their sovereigns if you ask for a specific year.

Agreed, they are my go to most the time. I have never been asked for ID, very friendly and they found me a 1959 recently to complete my first date run.

Stay away from HMG. Bought there only once, recently. Never ever again. It's so outrageous, it deserves its own thread actually. That's what I will do if they keep not responding. These incompetent folk sent me the wrong Sovereign and couldn't care less.

So what you're saying is if I go there and buy a best value sovereign, I might get given your premium sovereign? 😄

Only joking, that's terrible, hope they sort it for you.

You might order a Elizabeth First Head Sovereign and might get a 2019 Sovereign.

HGM used to be good years ago when you paid low percentage over spot and took your chances, those days are gone. It is believed a Certain couple of members on this site get to riffle through the best coins at HGM though there is no evidence for this only proof of coins received.  In the past every few coins and you would get a good one!! Not any more, every coin is ever new or rubbbish and sovereigns have been seperated into said Queens and Kings which are sold at a preimium again the prices have risen above spot.

Interesting. It doesn't matter how it comes about though, the result, thus what you get counts.

So, where else do I get Sovereigns:

Atkinsons a few, no complaint there about their coins, the only thing that I didn't like, at my first order over £1000 (and just over that) they were a bit funny and wanted a proof of my address which they said they coudn't find confirmed anywhere else, which means they are paying for access to data banks which is a bit creepy. I wrote to them, you have my address from my previous orders and send me the coins or my money back, so they sent me the coins.

The last time I looked, their stock for old Sovereigns was very poor compared to a few months ago.

I once bought in store at Baird's, I didn't like they asked for proof of address and a photo ID for 2 Sovereigns.

Chards - Bought a few coins there, no complaints

Bullion by post: No complaints

2 Local shops - a bit pricey but I actually prefer buying in person, so occassionally I go there (now only to one of them, the other one sold me a few fakes (one of which was an 18K half Sovereign) which they took back but it was a few fakes too many, in the end. One time can happen, 3 times is too much).

Bairds btw confirmed for me the 18k half Sovereign was what is was, even in a printed document, a service they provided for free when I was buying Sovereigns there.

The other day I went swimming and when I finished there suddenly was an antique fair in a gym hall - they also had Sovereigns, at one stall for 280 to 300 Pounds (at others I didn't ask for their prices) I didn't have a closer look but one was Victorian, veiled, if I remember that correctly. Probably pure bullion but I'm not sure and didn't have a closer look.

Didn't have enough money on me, only for a few silver coins that I picked up.

Pawn shops - I never actually bought there but I had a look at a few ones - Not really convincing prices and I also asked what they pay - Around £160 - for a FULL Sovereign, in 2 pawn shops, in the last few months/last year. Unbelievable! It must be inherits of a few Sovereigns with no clue of their value or people who are very desperate for a quick money fix who sell it to them.

The Silver Forum - the best place to buy at, from my experience.

Do any of these dealers have showrooms in places  other than London or Birmingham?

Bairds used to have a place in Mitchell st GL but stopped operating a while back. Don't know anywhere else
