Taking Silver on Flights

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm taking a trip to Hong Kong next month and plan to buy a bunch of tax-free silver.

Has anyone ever had trouble taking silver on flights with them in the past?

Assuming the limit for flights is $10,000 USD, does that mean I have to take less than that on my flight?

My apologies if this is a dumb question, I just want to be sure before I sink a bunch of money into silver and then get a bunch of it confiscated...

I have not had a problem in my PM movements - just stay below the 10k limit in "VALUE" - and you should be fine!

ps if you have a missus - - then thats 2 X 10K - the figure is per Individual

Thanks for the info!

Just FYI - last trip back from Cyprus (6 weeks ago) - I had 5K in my jacket pockets  - and got a "Glance" from the scanner guy!

I asked quietly - "do you need to talk to me about what you are seeing ? because I know what you can see!!

He answered - " NO its fine - you are the best customer I have had today !"

Yeah, it's fine. I live in Shanghai and regularly head there on small trips.

i am taking a trip to hk next month as well, but they are having riots at the moment and they are actually in the area you are buying from , so maybe you are used to police chasing you down the road with tear gas and street fighting with 10k worth of stuff on you , but I don't ………...

also the limit is around 400 pounds to bring back to uk , so again it is up to you to take this risk , normally it is ok

MY TOTAL FORUM TRADE FEEDBACK IS 100 AND IT IS 100%

So long as you check online where the protests are being held beforehand you should be ok.

I go to Canada yearly usually and always bring back silver in my carry on - never had an issue. You are making an error though which could land you with a big tax bill. The limit isn't $10000 - its £390. Any silver purchased will count towards your goods allowance since it is not seen as currency nor is it valued at face value. Anything under £390 in total value is tax free. Anything above you are obligated to declare and pay the 20% VAT. You can of course try to smuggle in excess but that isn't without risk.

If you think that way , that’s fine . 😂

Worse could happen to you is getting beaten by a police, tear gassed or shot with by an arrow from a protester. Oh may I say you may be accused of being an CIA Agent aswell. This said I think an expat had a gas canister hit him right near LPM yesterday 🤣 not a big deal.

I'm still confused with location!

OP lives in Shanghai, will buy in HK and then what? Go to UK?

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

Well, having been there myself and seen it with my own eyes, I think I'll trust my own judgement over something I've seen or read on the media. Good luck on your trip.
