Gold coin Storage ideas

Thats a pretty nifty idea, where do you get your tubes and capsules from?

tubes like these come up on the forum often enough - I think I stockpiled a few. @BackyardBullion and @SilverStan often get rid of them cheap.

The capsules are from Coinsgallery - look up their website - but they sell these mostly on their eBay account .

I also store my gold in Capsules and tubes but I only collect Sovereigns gold wise.

I use airtites for bith the capsule and tube. They fit very well.

strange thing is, the tube I use for half Sovereigns can fit 21 capsules instead of the usual 20 😵 Mind boggling.

What is the quality like for the airtite tubes? I have seen some reviews of the bottom of the tubes not glued / connected properly or not being strong enough, maybe they are rare cases.

There are many fakes about and in my opinion not worth the extra money. The 1 oz silver tubes are cheaper and sturdier

I've bought many Air-tite tubes in various sizes, A, H , T. and X, and all of them have been of great quality over all.  I've only had one fail, and that was after i dropped it and it was full of 20 oz of silver in capsules.  It landed on its bottom edge, and needless to say, the bottom seam didn't take the impact well.  But that was an extreme impact.  I've tossed them into boxes, into the safe, dropped them and they landed on their sides,  and the tubes have held up fine.

For the $5 pesos coins I use the tube you have there on the right. I think it's an A-size Air-Tites, and I use the Air-Tites 19mm direct fit capsules, since I prefer to see the sides of the coins (why hide that golden color?) I've also noticed that in many instances 21 capsules will fit in most Air-Tites tube sizes.

Beautiful stack!  I'm slowly getting my Air-Tite tube and ring capsules filled up with gold maple leafs.   Got a long ways to go to get to where you are.

Old thread but though I’d share! Similar method to others!! I use lighthouse capsules for the sovs and air tite tubes. Can fit 17 per tube. Can’t remember how many 1 oz fit in a tube with the ringed capsules i use. The width of my safe deposit box is exactly right for the sov tubes which is very handy!

I'm glad people are stacking their coins with care!

Sure, an RM tube is probably the most efficient gold/sq.in but they rub!

When I see @LawrenceChard shuffling sovereigns in his hand, I cringe!! :o

Sure, they're only bullion and they're not 999 but it seems so wrong....I mean, they're £300 plus.

You wouldn't chuck your Snap-On tools in a toolbox, no, you'd put them back on the socket rail they came from!

For me, initially the "storage ideas" were all ways to bulk up my stack and help motivate me. 25 sovs in and RM tube are quite underwhelming. Even 100 sovs looks a lot more substantial in the capsules and tubes than just 4 RM tubes. you have to use all tricks of the mind available to help push you forward! I love to have the entire collection in my boxes made by @alun but unfortunately I can't justify the SDB prices to store them. still hoping someone will develop a narrow box purpose built for SDB, a bit like the narrow watch boxes you see.

I too would always prefer people to take resonable care of their coins.

400 ounce good delivery bars, or even kilo bars are more space efficient than coins in RM tubes, but not really as enjoyable unless you have enough of them.

I'm sorry if me shuffling sovereigns makes you cringe. I tend to only do it with circulated coins, and even then I try to minimise the relative movement between them. There is a trade-off between processing efficiency and handling damage.

Yes, I keep forgetting they've gone up from £4

What's a socket rail? 🙂

On a serious note: I cringe at some of the treatment people give coins:

We quite often get proof sovereigns and proof sets, where the owners have had them all out of the capsules, got fingerprints and scratches on the coins, discarded the RM certificates, and chain-smoked so the boxes reek of smoke, and we have to "quarantine" them until the smell goes.

I remember collecting a large quantity (1000+) of sovereigns from an exclusive London address. The owners had bought them from us some years before, and paid extra for some new minty ones. When we arrived to collect them, we discovered they had let their kids use them as toys, so there were no longer any minty ones.

Another time, a chap bought a lot of modern proof gold from us over a few years, then some years later decided to sell them. He had taken the capsules out of the boxes so they could fit in his safe, but then let his grand-daughter sell many of them on ebay. the boxes he still had stank of tobacco smoke.

On a slight tangent, another thing which we find frustrating is when people bring us quite large "collections" of modern issues they have bought from one or more of the coin marketing companies. Often these are old people, usually not internet-savvy, and they have "invested" for their children, grand-children, etc, but never done any research until too late. It is quite common to hear that people have spent 6 figure amounts of money. One recent example must have cost about £600,000! We ended up paying him about 60% of that, but only because gold prices had gone up since he bought them. If he had bought bullion sovereigns, Britannias, or similar from us, he could have been getting over £1 million for them.

As it happens, there were many interesting coins, mainly because they were "new to us", but many of them are not highly sought after, and it requires considerable marketing effort to find good new homes for them. I suspect many dealers would have just bought them for scrap.

I too see way too many of these. Always with the original receipt which is depressing. These guys market them as investment as well, over the phone, they should really be taken to task over it one day.

I do often make critical comments about some of the CMCs, in full awareness of defamation laws. I think some people dismiss this as "slagging-off" competitors, but I always retain any evidence to support my views.

I do wonder that else I could do to bring about greater awareness of the problem.

Yes, it is very sad to see how some people are ripped off, investing their money unwise in precious metals. You can't do more, your messages are very clear and your answers are very elaborate. Who can read and understand, will learn quick. Respect for your hard work!

Hello

In December I started to enjoy collecting coins, so for my New Years' Resolution, I decided I will start a coin collection!
My question is, how do all of you store your coins? Right now, all of mine are in a pouch, but I think I want to get some of those 2x2 Cardboard/Mylar things, then put them into one of those sheets that holds them (No idea what they are called). goldpriceinhyderabad
First of all, would this be a good idea, or is it overkill? Most of my coins are just commemorative ones I found in circulation (I do have some that are a little more special to me too). Second, if you could post your collection (and how the coins look stored) I would be very appreciated!

2x2 are pretty good especially if you get an album for them. A lot of my world silver is in them
