Tutankhamun’s Mask

Serendipity

Recommended Posts

The first hi-res photo of Tutankhamun’s restored golden mask. The beard is back on. The gold has been buffed-up. Tutankhamun's mask is now looking as it should. Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled c. 1332–1323 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom or sometimes the New Empire Period. He has, since the discovery of his intact tomb, been referred to colloquially as King Tut.

Absolutely fantastic photo.

I was lucky enough to see the mask and all his treasures in the Cairo museum back in the very late 1980s. Intoxicating when you stand there looking at the real thing.

I think there may be conjecture around whether this was actually a depiction of Tut or reused from another source.  I think that makes it even more amazing!

This is so true and plenty of TV shows talk about it. I caught one show last week - I think they might be moving Tut and his treasures to a new purpose built museum just for him? Anyway, take my advice and go to Cairo and see him. Extend your trip to Luxor and Aswan and visit Karnak, Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel. Visit the temples at sunrise and enter the pyramids at dusk. Ride a camel in the desert, smoke a hookah and buy Egyptian silver and gold.
