Coin care

Hi all. I’m looking for advise on coin care and cleaning.

I have just inherited a load of old coins. Some look to be of value some more common like the old Penny’s.

Some are so worn and discoloured that I can’t even recognise them.

Any tips on cleaning without damage the value. I don’t want to soak in coke/vinegar only to find it’s a rare coin and it’s ruined.

Many thanks, I will post some pics in another thread once I get to good photos of the collection. 8294CA03-A900-4635-9F91-7F3FD6431262.thumb.jpeg.7406fff731c01651965c0aa985eb223a.jpeg

The best advice that I can give you is not to clean your coins because you’ll only halve their value. The best thing you can do is to email photos of your coins as they are to Baldwin’s who deal in rare coins and they’ll be more than happy to email you back. However, they’ll be less than happy if you email them “cleaned” coins.

You could go on the the british coin forum: www.predecimal.com

They specialise in numismatic coins especially non precious metal coins, Im sure you will find some very knowledgeable collectors.  Its a tricky subject to clean or not on the one hand you can ruin any collector value, however some coins may have been stored in less than archival storage eg pvc slips/ coin pages which can excelorate the decay of your coins.
