Hi

just started to buy gold coins, would a 1/2 oz mexican libertad 2017 be a good buy at around £700 ?

thanks for any advice

I like the libertard a lot and I'd be tempted to possibly pay 700 but then I'd remember the price of an oz is about 1200, so that's a pretty big premium.

You'd have to really like the coin, I'm not sure how desirable and therefore how easy it would be to sell later on. If that's not something you're worried about then go for it. I've not seen many 1/2oz ones for sale in the UK.

£700- given the current Spot Price- I think this is an ok premium to pay for a Proof Libertad 1/2 Onza.

There was only a 700 overall Mintage- 500 were sold in sets and only 200 Individual coins in this weight in 2017.

But note, I'm biased- I own this 2017 coin as well as the other 4 in the set.

Any idea what the condition is? It should be as 'from the mint' and (preferably) never been out of the cap, and probably it has if the seller is not a fool, but crucial info missing there.

Is it a key year/coin for the 'complete' set? (I haven't checked the Lib mintage recently beyond my key 2015s recently so no idea, but certainly would before buying one at that price).

For a first purchase of gold of course it's a lovely pick up, but I am currently thinking and looking at the intrinsic price of gold and wondering if premium coins will be worth it in the next five years or so. That is only because I expect gold to rise an awful lot higher - you need to make your own decision there (don't listen to me, make your own mind up based on research!). I would go with bullion myself right now if I could afford any in that kind of price range.

2017 isn't a key year for proof Gold Libertads- the 1/20th and 1 Onza only had a 600 mintage- 500 in sets and 100 individual coins.

The Bullion issue 2017 Libertads however, have crazy low mintages- 1/20th- 1000;  1/10th only 300 coins! and the 1/4 Onza just 500, the 1/2 Onza 700, the Onza just 900.

The 2014 Proof Libertads is THE key year- just 250 of each weight!  2013 & 2015 Proofs also have crazy low mintages.

The bullion version is going for the same price as the proof on APMEX...

But overall do agree with @kimchi, that the best price to spot is the way to go!

...But just look at that 2017 1/2 oz gold proof Libertad beauty!!!

Breathtaking.

I might prompt some backlash here- but the Proof 1/2 and Onza Libs are much more striking than the Reverse Proof variety 😩

No backlash from this end...I agree...I mean just look at the 2017 beauty!! They just don’t stand out in the shiny of the 2018 reverse proof!😊

I wouldn’t say no to a suitcase full!  Only thing is- you couldn’t fill a decent sized suitcase with the entire mintage of them 😂

I’d buy that for a dollar! (Name the reference). Also, if I recall, @Sal bought out almost all of the 2018 Reverse Proof 1/2 oz Libertads!

Depends what your short-term/end goal is imvho :) If it's not to make a packet and enjoy your coin however you wish unless and until you might sell I would recommend do whatever you want with it! :)

Not from me - I think the reverse proofs were a very poor effort that they royally messed up. However I have no idea on return on investment etc, so may very well be doing OK, no idea! @Numistacker?

An excellent resource, thank you! I don't personally see bullion versions doing great things over and above what I think base gold will do very soon, that's why I recommended gold bullion (NOT bullion Libertads - sorry my mistake) for a first purchase.

I think I have the five coin 2015 Proof set, must get it out of storage to check! Two very key coins in there iirc.

Great thread lots of info.

First thing that I think I would say is that Bullion Libertads are not Bullion,  they are semeé Numismatic Collector’s is Coins and some of them have extremely low meant which makes them highly desirable as investments.  The 2017 1/10 of an ounce do you Libertad has a mintage of 300 coins for example.  One of the things that make make them fun and collectible is the variation across years and denominations.

Proof Libertads are my favorite type.  2014, 2013 and 2015 are all the most recent key dates is highly collectible and should be a great investment going forward.

Try to buy a 2014 or 2013 proof in any denomination and you will know exactly what I mean.

The reverse Proof is pretty nice and has graded well. The  2019 has just gone on sale but the premiums are pretty high because of the recent gold price hike.

All in all  Libertads  remain my favorite semi-Numismatic  modern gold coin or perhaps equal with Sovereigns.

Hi All

thanks for all the replys, they were a big help.

i purchased the 2017 libertad this afternoon, i did email them before, and they confirmed it is in excellent BU condition purchased direct from the mint.

the purchase was from coininvest.com, and they still have some in stock if anyone is interested

thanks again for all the information, you can learn a lot from this forum.

Excellent first Gold purchase 😃.

But where do you go next from here?

Unless its another Libertad or a nice rare Sovereign, it'll be like getting out of a Rolls Royce and into a Ford Escort Popular Plus.  😂

Pity- can you send it back?

I’ll give you Spot Price!

But seriously- don’t worry about the spots.  Particularly if you were going to grade anyway.  As long as there are no other issues with it, send it to @Numistacker to consign to NGC with conservation- the red spots will get removed- don’t forget to ask for a nice México special label.

If you don’t want to grade- still don’t worry about the spots- some coins develop them, some don’t, luck of the draw.
