Is Coin Collecting A Male-Dominated Hobby?

It seems to be, it shouldn't be, interest in colecting should run across the board, perhaps even being female biased as the majority owners of PMs are women...you'd think they'd be all over thkngs of value, maybe they have too much sense to collect 'old dirty coins'...lol.

It is a slightly odd one, as all the research I've ever seen (having previously worked in neuroscience research) points towards women preferring low risk/low reward methods of saving etc., often avoiding even so much as S&S ISAs and sticking with standard savings accounts or Premium Bonds. My wife is a perfect example of this, despite (being an accountant) having far more financial knowledge than I.

Now, while we know gold and silver coins to be a good store of wealth, there is a lot of risk that you don't really know what you're doing when you first start - my wife thought you had to get a broker involved to buy investment gold, for some reason - so perhaps that is risk enough to trigger subconcious biases against risk?

Certain things just appeal more to men, watch collecting is another, and this is why gents watches retain their value so much better - nothing wrong with it and of course there will be exceptions. But collecting coins/stacking bullion is very much a male dominated hobby.

i am not a coin collector as such - i have no interest in coins other than gold and silver. i value the coins primarily on the precious metal. i have many thousands of coins, i have developed a reasonably amount of knowledge over time but still do not consider myself a coin collector. i invest in gold and silver.

We have discussed the notion there are few women members of the silver forum - there are a few - some have been chased off by rude comments - the language is pretty laddish at times. This is how it should be b/c this is how the membership is and we shouldn't change to attract a handful of women.

Women do not invest like men do - they do not invest as much. Members are here for gold and silver - they are at some level or other investors. This is a gold and silver investment forum and as such you will find few women. If it were a jewelry forum perhaps you would find more women.

According to my YouTube analytics.....Yes!

i would not be surprised if the number of men viewing your videos was not even higher - it is not unusual for men to use a female profile on social media.

Sadly it no longer matters to me whether this age bracket is middle aged!

Absolutely it is. And its simple biology. Men are drawn to interests which involve things and stuff. Women enjoy interests with more links to people and places.

This has been true for pretty much forever and is the biological basis of much gender disparity in many fields of work, i.e engineering and nursing

If my other half is anything to go by, then no, as she has no interest in it at all. She doesn't like the look of the sovereigns and doesn't really like gold at all... the only time she has paid any interest was when i dragged her along to a coin show and she saw @AndreasAfeldt and said "oh, he is quite good looking" 🤦‍♂️

Maybe we should have a jewelry section for that reason, men and women like jewelry, heck watches are jewelry with a hint of usefulness, maybe wed attract more women then.

I'm going to say something un PC.

Women don't need to invest. All they have to do is keep themselves looking attractive and wealthy suitors will be falling around them in order to get access to that love triangle between their legs. And the dog ugly one's (read as Feminists and other like minded Man haters) don't even need to do that, as they can simply use their voting power to get access to Men's wealth via the welfare state (read as taxation).

As the old saying goes "Men pay while Women lay".

Which also works in tandem with the other old saying from Men of old "No hymen, no diamond".

Let the fake virtue signalling white knighting outrage commence!!!!!!!!!

Me too, it's a welcome respite unless you're dealing with Walter and the softies.

Tbh, the female members on here can hold their own and are able to bite back if necessary 😉

Yes, I'm sure it's because of the patriarchy

Not that gender matters anyway though because it's a social construct, but at the same time don't any of you dare misgender me or it's a hate crime and you're going to jail!

Thanks

I'm sure there's a fetish for every occasion :P:ph34r: Just don't lock the door during 'video time' or self-flagellate when the postie delivers your latest purchase and I'm sure you'll be fine :)

@tallyhojim you might be looking in the wrong places mate. Most of my girlfriends have been significantly richer than me and not cared a jot about my wealth. The last one was a virtuoso violinist and her instrument was worth a good £300k. She told me her mum had sent over some cash in the post to tide her over, so we went to get it changed, it came out to £8k or 9k. Sent as cash in the post from abroad  For money laundering we had to get her passport etc and come back while they prepared the cash. I was not particularly happy with a long trip across London and back with that sort of money in my bag!

Rich lasses - if you've not met many you might be amazed!
