So my Queen Vic and Albert are now positioned side by side

Lovely 😁

Whether one favours the monarchy or not, one cannot dispute their affection for each other.

Having just looked at the Royal Mint's web site, it appears that the Prince Albert SOTD is now back in stock - "limited stock".  The price has gone up to £550 (the release price was £500).  I suppose that makes sense, if you are struggling to sell something, put up the price!

Interesting!

It doesn't seem to sell out in under one minute... I just put one in my basket, just to see if it works. I did not buy it because I got one last year.

There was no hype and I don’t think people have realised!

They have a total of six available. I understand that they are not returns. It is stock that was held back in error, from what I have been told.

Hi Andrew, how do you know they're not returns, did you manage to speak with them. Regards Karl

Yes, I called to ask whether I could buy a second one, given the one household limit and because I’d been able to get one earlier. The customer services person confirmed that it was fine to do so, if I wanted. He spoke to the team who gave him the information that he passed onto me. I asked about why they had more and was told that it was extra stock and not returns.

Thanks for the information, I have ordered one so will see if they are returns or not.

Me too! Guess you can just return if it necessary. That’s my view. I’m going to be stepping into the world of grading in February and wanted to have two or three nice items to ‘go for it’ with and this seemed to be a good way to start! I’ll be sending a silver proof Una, a 2020 2oz Krugerrand, hopefully a 2013 1/2 Sov and the Albert...as well as a nice 1976 Maundy set. I’m excited to start 2020 on a high after a difficult end to 2019 so figured the availability of Albert was a sign!!

I think at £550 they have to be a winner for the future on a 650 mintage... Good luck with the grading, i've been grading direct with NGC for 6 months now and graded over 100 coins and so far all has gone well.

Thank you! I will be going through numistacker as I’m clueless on point! Need to find my feet. I am still concentrating on stacking but decided to do a wee bit of grading in 2020. It’s something I know very little about so excited to start. I’m not sure about grading the Una because it seems they are all pretty much hitting a 70 so I may end up keeping that coin raw and just having it as a beautiful coin to hold (in the capsule!) and look at from time to time!!

It’ll be back in stock again later this week.

I am returning the one I bought last week. It’s arrived today and has clearly been repackaged. I’m not sure how the RM think it’s reasonable to sell a defective product for £500.00 and then accept a return only to repackage and then resell for £550.00. They also told me that this was stock not returned items.

A complaint has been sent. Is it really so difficult to perfect an item with such a low mintage and such a high premium?

That's a good price. I see the new 2020 Spink catalogue values them at £700 now.

I'm actually tempted to keep this and resell on ebay. Problem there is I do not really want to sell on a load of bad and if I am honest in the advert (as I of course would be) it probably wouldn't sell for more than I paid.....what with the costs of listing, paypal etc. what would the point be?

I guess if someone wants an Albert Sovereign, they could let me know asap before I send it back to the RM? Happy to sell for the Spink listing price of 700.00 hahaha!!! (offers always accepted!)

Oh blimey how disappointing. How could you tell it was a repackaged return?

The packaging is perfect and the box almost squeeked when opened. The coin however has some small marks and unless they have significant minting issues, this should not have been sent out. The first one I received (which I auctioned on here for prostate cancer) was great aside from a few small black marks - which I understand are not an issue......this second coin however has marks and dents which ARE an issue.......

I called the Royal Mint last week before I placed the order because I wanted to be sure I could take a second (given their 'one per household' position). They said there and then on the phone that it was extra stock rather than returns. So perhaps this is true - however, I cannot help but think this is a return they have just put in new packaging and charged an extra 50.00 for.....

Just had a response from the RM who amongst other things have said the below. I think they are apologising for nothing here. The sovereign is up to their usual standard. I think I’ve been lucky with recent purchases from them!!

“Rest assured this won’t have been a returned item that was re-sold and sent to you and we do have strict quality controls in place, so I’m concerned to read that your Sovereign is not up to the usual standard.”

Sorry to hear this was the case. My one arrived yesterday and to the naked eye (well my naked eye anyway) it looks fine. When I zoomed in on photos I took I could see a couple of minor black marks as has been reported here in this thread by several others. Someone could have returned it on those grounds I suppose but I'll never know. I don't know how a coin with marks or especially dents could possibly make it through QC. Boggles the mind
