Cleaning my junk silver

Talking about cleaned coins I find it strange NGC consider cleaned gold coins equivalent to scrap value even though they don't look cleaned.

The reason I say this, I recently had this experience with them. I also  seen a couple of coin that said cleaned and this put me off buying them. Pretty much frustrating.

Back on topic, well done. My apologies to the OP for contributing to it going way off.

It would be helpful if they actually had different descriptions of cleaned details slabs, so you could judge whether you were prepared to buy the coins or not.

There is a big difference between coins that have been polished, cleaned with fine hair lines, parallel scratches, altered surface, dipped in acid etc.

I'm sure they must be able to distinguish most or all of these scenarios so why not say what they mean?

Unless of course they're not exactly sure, but just don't like the look of a coin.

Its subjective the extent  of cleaning. I contacted the dealer he told me to send them back and he refunded me full refund, he was very helpful, although he didn't agree with their results.

Thankfully  the company ,  Baldwins, refunded me and that was after about a year. really nice people to deal with.

Some they catagorized as improperly cleaned and others wizzed.

My bad old chap - wasn’t sure if you had a sense of humour 😜

Indeed I do and it can be very strange at times, it was just my version of bathos😜

It doesn’t matter what you collect there’s always someone telling you shouldn’t (fill in whatever fits your collecting habit).

Other than silver I collect champagne, the champagne being an open ended hobby. Someone will come along and tell me I’ve devalued the bottle by opening it!

I can't see why NGC can say anything about cleaned coins as don't they have a sub branch that specialises in cleaning coins for them to get a higher grad so the slabbers can get more money for them. Do NGC put anything on the holder to say they have cleaned them

@Gildeon Nice job on the coins. How did you get them so clean?!

I used a Lighthouse cleaning cloth on my small pile of US junk silver for some of the reasons already expressed. I like to handle them and show to friends without getting mucky hands. I know they're only worth melt anyway.

bitter is nicer at cellar/slightly cooler than room temperature rather than cold. i'm sure you yanks would regard that as "warm"😉

For collectible coins I use a silver bath if I want to remove ugly toning. If it is nice I leave it. It works for other things like fingerprints etc. If the coin is quite dirty I use acetone, either as a bath or softly with an ear cotton. This also works very well with some greenish stuff that appears on silver coins. Never had problem with the above, even with coins sent for grading.

For junk/metal value coins, which are also quite worn, I use the below. Works wonders but you forget any numismatic value, so better check any rare dates etc in advance.

One of my Lunar 1 coins has some black toning on the rim of the queens side and . Would you remove it... and will it come back?

I would just dip it in a silver cleaning solution. You may need to dip the whole coin, to look uniform, if it has some slight toning. Leuchturrm silver cleaning bath is good, although not the strongest for some serious cases. Any photos?

It's on one of my 10oz coin so i'm a bit careful. I even never take them out of their capsules. I can manage photo tomorrow :)

It will also be challenging to dip in this size. Probably applying the solution with a cotton will do the job. Can tell you more when I see it. 🤓
