NGC and Ebay coworking

Another way to fleece the punters.

So they are going to give an opinion on an ebay auction, where they will not view the coin in hand, but rely on images the seller provides. And once you've bought the coin based on their opinion they then try and get you to stick the coin in a bit of plastic for an even bigger fee

Of course this will just be an "opinion", and they won't take responsibility if they are wrong on their assessment. Would be interesting legal wise, to see how they fare stating they believe a coin is something that it is not, and if this affects a sellers auction outcome. Or if someone finds a coin auction, gets a "preliminary opinion" on its grade. and buys that coin on the strength of their "expert" opinions, and when they send it off to be graded it actually comes in much lower.

But hey ho, no doubt the slabbers will be salivating at this, and they'll be seething and sending me dirty looks through the ethernet for my comments. ........

Sensible people on the other hand will be rolling their eyes 🙄

This was posted previously by @au79. I still think the same...  its potentially useful for higher value items where the fee won't matter so much but will do absolutely nothing to stop the vast trade of cheaper counterfeit coins. No one will pay for this to prove a 1oz bullion silver coin is legit, for example. Nice thought but I imagine ultimately useless against the current counterfeit coin trade on ebay.

Absolutely spot on. Just a way of ripping off people worried about fake coins

The more I think about it, if this is a genuine tie up between NGC and Ebay, then the more annoyed I am. Ebay continually allows fake coins to be sold on its site, inspite of thousands of reports telling them. And that lack of action on ebays part, has led to this climate of distrust, where some people are worried about the coins for sale on ebay and low and behold there is a company to help these coin buyers. NGC who is "an appoved grading company of ebay"

This years lunar coin smells better than this tie up.
