International Travel and Blackout coins

Hello one and all.

I am brand new to stacking and collecting. I am generally trying to go for weight as I begin. But I would like to dip my toe into some pieces that would retain value despite the swing in market value of the metal.

If anyone has the time I have a couple quick questions.

1st: I see a few of these "blackout" coins especially from a couple years ago. They look great, seem to have a limited mintage but do they have any value to them? Or are they just a gimmick for newbies like me?

2nd: I am planning a trip to Austrailla next year and I would like to pick up some native coins, rounds, or bars while I'm there. Any tips for purchasing or (even better) possibly trading coins and bullion overseas?

I apologize if I missed a post on these topics in the forum. I did check first but couldn't find anything.

If "blackout" means same as "antiqued"/ruthenium plated etc, give it a miss IMO.

For Australia depends where you'll visit. In Melbourne I'd recommend Bullion Now, in Perth for example Perth Bullion (not the Mint). Drop us locals a message when you know where you'll be headed - there might be a coin show or a local stacker meet where you can make a "guest star" appearance.

Also, buy gold.

I’m not American, but have a good idea of the “blackout” coins that @DarkStacker is referring to. They are black ruthenium-plated coins which have been highlighted in 24k gold such as ASEs and Kennedy half-dollars. The US Mint produces these legal tender coins, of course, but a private Mint, the Merrick Mint, which specialises in colorising coins plates them. The Merrick Mint is not affiliated with the US Mint or any government agency and these coins are best avoided. I was initially attracted to these coins before discovering they are not solid ruthenium like solid platinum coins.

oh those...

i don’t know much about the pricing of those types because basically I steer clear of colored coins or whatever these are. Do a comparison of auctions going on now and completed auctions on eBay and see if the prices are where you’re comfortable. But for me I’d never ever try to collect these.
