$20 Double Eagle damaged but at spot, Good pick?

Recommended Posts

Hello there!

It's my first time buying 'numismatic' as bullion investment, this podcast convinced me it was a good idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jE_pHN9H_U

I found a random guy online selling his $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle at spot +15€ shipping and I went ahead and bought it. It's as bit damaged with a dent on in but as far as I know these coins were moved around in bags and what not.

Do you guys think it's a good pick? The pictures are from the seller, I'll post better ones once it arrives.

For anyone interested here is a picture of the coin. It looks good to me and pases the good old ping test. I'm not into numismatics but this things at spot look good although the feeling of not being able to 100% guarantee its gold content is a bit uncomfortable.

you can buy one of these without any damage from a reputable dealer for spot plus %3, so buying  a damaged one at spot price plus shipping from a random person is probably not such a great deal to be perfectly honest with you.

Not sure if it's the light and your photo device but there's something I don't like about this coin. In particular the ledge at 3pm makes me suspicious. Probably start checking the right starburst line and stars against the reference image as due to your picture quality this has to be in your hands

Here's the PCGS reference image:

Which reputable dealers sell them for around £1040 just now?  Which is approximately spot plus 3%.

bullion by post and others charge over £200 more for them and hgm charge over £1100.

Here it is at 1059GBP (but priced in EUR) https://www.thegoldhouseonline.es/comprar/148/20$/dollarusadouble/eagle/saint/gaudens1850/1907/ They are legit, a friend of mine buys there all the time. They send you pictures of the coin in particular if you need to but I'm not sure if they speak english.

I can't seem to find anything odd:

I think he's talking about the little bump that may just be a nick from the other side or edge that you've almost cut off in your close up.  5th star down from leaves on the rim.

Gold is soft so nicks can happen easily.  I'm sure you can examine it in person much better than we can from pics.  Have you done a specific gravity/density test?  That should be more decisive than just a ping, given you haven't other st gaudens to compare.

Better looking pictures:

I don't like the stars on the left between rim ding and torch: they are irregular shaped but that could be the light direction and inclination of the legend

Bottom corner, you just cut off the image exactly on this protrusion on the rim.

Sorry I didn't get you, my english failed me a bit. I'm not a natural english speaker.

The starts look ok to my eye just looking at them, maybe it's the picture.

The ledge is a dent on the edge of the coin:

It may be real ^_^

Just checked out the website you bought the coin from and looks okay..got some nice coins for sale!.

No no, I bought on eBay from a guy that had very poor keywords for the coin and nobody bid on it. It looked to me like a guy with just a coin inherited or something that wanted the cash.

Nonetheless the http://thegoldhouseonline.es is cool, they have very good prices for old coins. I've never bought but as I said, a friend of mine has been buying and selling there since a long time ago. I'd be confident buying from them.

Listo. Más vale prevenir pero si has chequeado todo bien y estás satisfecho; y por una vez fotos con la manicura perfecta.
