PCGS Gold Shield

Is anyone else preferring these? I am starting I look for them almost exclusively. They seem to only cross over around 2 in 10 NGC MS/PR 70 coins. I really like this stricter standard. As I have mentioned before on this forum I am not always happy with NGC, and have shown photos proving some of their 70s are not 70s. With PCGS, I never have this problem. I am considering seeing how much it would be to cross over a bunch of my NGC 70s. I think this is the new “Gold Standard” in grading so to speak. Anyone have thoughts or experiences to share?

PS I will post some pics of my favorite gold shields so far shortly. Some of the 69s would be 70s for sure by NGC standard.  It apparently I am picky, I agree with PCGS and would t have graded these coins 70s either.

I thought the gold shield just meant you paid a little extra at time of grading and they took some pics for their website with the coin description? Didn't know it had anything at all to do with the actual grade?

Don’t quote me on this but I am looking at a coin on eBay right now that backs up my theory. The guy said he had 11 of these coins in NGC 70 and 9 came back as 69s and only 2 as 70s. This seems to be consistent. I am not sure if general PCGS is as strict as well. It may be I haven’t really researched that. Definitely wondering what other people’s thoughts and experiences are...

The eBay link I am looking at today 5/8/19 at 9:40am. Real time. I see this more and more. I want stricter standards for modern MS70s. This back up my poor experiences with NGC 70s that are not 70s...

Some people may well agree that pcgs are stricter than ngc. Ngc seem to do a lot of bulk modern coins, and if they are not careful they are in danger of diluting their brand. Too many coins going through is bound to mean that eventually quality control will suffer.

Given the choice I prefer pcgs to ngc but it's up to you. I was just saying don't get sucked into the gold shield thing because it has no bearing on the grade/quality of a coin.

I agree. I consistently prefer PCGS as I get more experience. But I don’t want to over pay for a coin either. Hence I won’t be buying that Kookaburra. I just got a 1989 Kook with a population of 3 for about $150usd, so I would never pay as much as he is asking for a 2009 kook that is easier to find. This is where I do thing the gold shield can conversely run too high a price. Buyer beware hahah.

.... Edit ... and Hence “wish I had the money” if we were all born with silver spoons in our mouths and life was free, we would all just buy whatever we wanted wouldn’t we? 🤣

PCGS are currently quoting a crossover success rate of 38% over the last 12 months but does not specify which coins have been submitted. All of the modern gold proof coins i have submitted for crossover have been successful so maybe the older coins do not fair so well ? I have been grading with PCGS for some time mainly using the Paris centre, the service is very good and you can get your coins back in two weeks if you time it right. My only complaint is that i have had debris inside the holder several times, the worst been a 1cm fibre or hair and sometimes the holders they use are marked, but in both cases they rightly reholder free of charge.

The main difference with gold shield is that you get a high res photo on the website and PCGS claim that it gives enhanced security.
