Silver Diddlers- under 24mm dia. - Edward VII 3d's

Thought it would be interesting to run a topic/posting on the Bob size or smaller silver coins less than 24mm dia. (the Diddlers) out there just for general interest........   hope thats ok?

Many remain very collectable, particularly for budding school age collectors;  fairly cheap (not always) & may get overlooked by the 1oz/larger coin collectors.

So to kick-off here are 3 circulated silver (.925 sterling silver) 3d (threepences) old money; for many years the smallest silver circulated British coin-16.2mm.dia..   There were 4 to each shilling.  Issued: 1902-1910 & perfect for a collector short of cash, but has a matchbox for "secure" storage.  These are interesting coins and even today have a use in Christmas Puddings (just don't swallow them).1635816945_EdwardVII3d190789rvcirc.thumb.JPG.193a1b43131b6c74db542ddc0bb2be9e.JPG

1892 The original Silver Kruger"sixpence"!  A nice interesting  .925 Sterling Silver Diddler dia. 19.35mm. Produced from about 1892-7 in the Suid Africaansche Republiek - ZAR with the date and value surrounded by two olive branches. I understand 1892 year coins have better quality detail. ( I wonder what the future has in store for RSA?)

I think originally these may have been minted in the Royal Prussian Mint, Berlin; with Otto Schultz the engraver whose initials (OS) were removed from 93 onwards.

To complement a Canadian 10cent - here is a circulated sterling silver .925  Victorian 1891 5cent. A bit worn.  Has a reeded edge.   Engraver- LC Wyon??

Quite a pretty little coin- the "young" Victoria (surely she was about 70 by now!) with, I guess, an "olive branch" crown

I have an 1850 Swiss 10 Rappen.  Quite worn and only 10% silver but a nice design.

You never think of the Swiss being short of precious metal and skimping on silver;  but it might be because that's the first year they produced coins under the Swiss  Federal Coinage Act - so 1850 is quite a historic coinage date; (maybe also because it was worth a 10th of a Franc?)

Thick rimmed Indian Emperor George VI  Silver (.500) 1/4 Rupee.  Bombay mint as dot below Lotus flower? There is a lot of symbolism jostling on the reverse

Now here's an interesting question.....what happened to the Indian quarter Rupee in 1943/5?   I believe they were still .500 silver until 1946.

The coin looks double thickness like a sandwich with ?silver in between the two sides  weighs 2.93g approx

Does anyone know why this occurred please??

According to Numista - “During 1943 the edge changed from reeded to security edge”

Here’s the 1942/3 reeded edge - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces22399.html

And here’s the 1943/5 security edge - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces4854.html

Thankyou- I had heard about a security edge but thought they meant  something about the milling but Numista makes it very, very obvious .... thank you ....... its still an odd little coin...    only half a billion had a security edge during this 3 yr period!!

Empress Victoria on an 1891 quarter Rupee - .917 silver. One of several millions! (I only have one)

The fine engraving (engraver William Wyon) on this coin is impressive in my view. I guessminted in Calcutta but I am unsure- anyone know?

I have a stupid amount of diddlers, here is one partially filled box...

Where do you gather such a quantity from?  Ebay?  I rarely see lots with low enough premium to beat regular bullion, a few here and there in very poor condition.  Would like a stack of these sorts of coins, more interesting, not a whole box though.

Oh that's a pretty little thing. It would be sweet to stack a roll/tube of these.
