Where to get cheap capsules

Recommended Posts

Hi all -- After working on the silver price comparison article, I've wondered where to get capsules for the best price. Any suggestions in North America?

What's the deal with Air-Tites? Are they the best or just a popular brand?

Thanks.

Air-tites are a good capsule, some would say the best. 'Cheap' ones may be made of plastic that eventually damages silver coins.

I read something about PVC being bad for coins. What are Air-tites made of? Acrylic?

yes they are acrylic. " capsules are hard, crystal clear acrylic, and contain no PVC to damage your coins. "

Genuine Air-Tite are definitely the best not to be confused with similar sounding named capsules.
They are individually wrapped so each capsule cannot rub against its neighbour and they do tend to be a bit more transparent and definitely more resistant to rub marks.
Unfortunately for us Brits the shipping costs are very high because of the volumetric package size.

I bought bags of similar sounding much cheaper capsules from the USA but a lot of them were scuffed in the centres as they rub together and the plastic seems less scratch resistant.
They were about 10% of the price though so fine for Maples and Eagles etc. that otherwise would not merit a capsule.

I recently purchased a new Lighthouse ( Leuchturm ) rimless capsule that looks an ideal alternative working out cheaper than Air-Tite.

Just be aware that a tight fitting capsule will be tricky to reopen but crystal clear rimless caps are definitely what to put your treasured coins into.
