I doubt they had the capacity for fiendish fakery we have these days!

oh i think they did quite well on the fakery front.

lower grade gold or silver, short weight

probably why they started marking pieces or gold, standardising the weight

putting the kings head on it................oh wait,.....thats a gold coin!

Just seeming the news in the last couple weeks with Indonesia and Florida gold wouldn’t be top of the list when it comes to survival.    Water, batteries, fuel food etc.   I’m far from a prepper or think the U.K. will ever get to a shtf but these would be thugs that are needed first.    Anyone into inventing technology, a solar phone charger would be probably higher on lists than pm’s

Really ?

Beyond a few very simple tests (appearance, sound, etc ..) they had no way to determine an objects metal content.  Before reeding criminals even shaved the edges of coins to make them slightly smaller.  Today technology has made it possible to basically eliminate the chance that a coin you are buying is counterfeit, what ancients wouldn't have done for some of those tools

Other than making gold less pure, I don't think they had any way of adulterating gold to fake a real coin. I will stand to be corrected if anyone can produce any evidence to the contrary, but I don't think they had access to tungsten metalurgy etc. Checking the softness of a coin was probably sufficient and if they could weigh it, even better.

Today, we do have the technology to detect almost any forgery but how accessible is this among the common man? The bad guys do have the means to create fake gold but how prevalant is the means to detect the really good stuff other than specialised operators?

and don't forget I was originally referring to small pieces of gold, not necessarily gold coins.

It would be interesting to know when the acid test for gold was developed. Nitric acid itself was discoverd in the mid 1600's so we can assume it will have been used not long afterwards.
