Hey guys

Since I’ve only got British coins in my collection I was thinking of buying one American Eagle and one Canadian maple leaf both in 1 oz gold bullion.

what do you think of these coins ?

Is it a good idea ?

if yes which version/year should I buy ? Any in particular?

Instead of the American Gold Eagle (.9167 fine), I would suggest the American Gold Buffalo (.9999 fine). Both contain a net of 1 tr oz gold. Eagle started in 1986, Buffalo in 2006. Both $50 face value.

Canada Maple Leaf gold (.9999 fine) started in 1979. Contains a net of 1 tr oz gold and $50 face value. From 2013 and onwards, micro-engraving has been added as a security feature.

If CGT is going to be problematic for you then stay UK. If not I'd go libertad or something nice from Perth Mint.

Thanks for mentioning this, I was going to ask, CGT applies to any non British gold coins, doesn’t it ? How about VAT ? Will I pay VAT when I buy them from dealers ?

Yes to CGT, no to VAT.

Or the Buffalo which is 9999

I would buy a Maple but the depiction of Her Majesty is not to my taste.

you are absolutely right, the Buffalo looks great and makes more sense too.

and you're also right about the maple, I didn't pay much attention to  her majetsy's side of the coin, doesn't look as good as the other side.

Unless you are going to look at your coins after purchase rather than stick them in a safe, vault or buried in the garden, go for the least expensive as when it comes to selling it probably won't make much difference and if you pay a premium now you may be disappointed when selling.
