Coin Shop Recommendations - Las Vegas & LA?

NeutronJack

Recommended Posts

Greetings to All,

I will shortly be visiting the USA on business (spending time in Las Vegas and LA) and thought I might pick up the first few American coins to add to my hitherto UK-centred silver stack.

With that in mind, I'd very much welcome any advice or recommendations that fellow members of the The Silver Forum might be able to offer regarding ...

a) What would be the best coin store(s) to visit in each city?

b) Any particular stand-out American silver coins it might be worth targeting?

For the record, I'm not planning to 'fill my boots' on this occasion (... unless things go extraordinarily well at the casino!), but rather pick up a few representative examples of modern American silver bullion.

Thanks very much in advance.

NeutronJack

Hey Jack,

In Las Vegas, I usually go to Nevada Coin Mart. Two weeks ago they had a special on morgan and peace dollars for $15. The only thing they tax are ASEs.

If you are going to be in town Sept 14-16 the CK Coin show will be at the Westgate, I highly recommend going there.

Also, there is a guy that goes by the Duke of Fremont. He is a reputable source and will meet up with you for a sale. If you Google his name, he has a webpage with his number.

As for American silver I like ASEs, Morgans, silver Ike dollars, and any round or bar made by Englehard.

Hope this helps

Hi Jack

I agree about the Nevada Coin Mart.

If you go west, there is a very good specialist in St George with a spectacular silver collection - it is All Good Coin.

I think there is no tax in Utah on gold but I am not an expert.

Very interesting! Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge and silver preferences @TheDude. I'll certainly try to act on your suggestions whilst I'm there.

The CK Coin Show, in particular, sounds appealing. Hope I can make it over there at some point.

Moreover, "The Duke" sounds like an interesting character. Have you ever used his services yourself?

Would you also be inclined to use the same sources in the case of purchasing gold?

Thanks again for your welcome response. It's much appreciated.

Thanks @dicker. It looks like Nevada Coin Mart is going to be my first port of call.

Not sure I will make it to Utah on this occasion. But, this is certainly good to know, with regard to future visits.

Thank you again.

Yes I have done business with the Duke before. He usually goes to the gunshows in town, and if I still have any cash left over I pay him a visit. I spoke with him a couple of weeks ago and he said he will also be at the CK coin show. The only gold I remember him having were slabbed pre-1933 us coins though.

I have purchased gold from Nevada Coin Mart before. Their premiums that I remember are $50 over for 1oz, and $25 for 1/4oz on coins aside from eagles.

Last time I was at the CK show I was not in the market for gold, but I am sure it will be there.

No problem, hope you find something that peaks your interest.

  • 3 weeks later...

By way of an update, I thought I’d share details of the silver (and gold) pickups I was able to acquire on my recent Las Vegas trip.

With the recent falls in gold and silver prices, it was interesting to note how very low available stocks of modern bullion for sale actually were, at the coin shops I visited.

Did I simply pick the wrong day, or are Americans very actively buying both metals at current price levels?

As such, my choices were largely dictated by what remained on the shelves, which tended to be of an earlier vintage.

Here’s a summary of what I bought (in no particular order):

-2x 2018 1oz American Silver Eagles (BU) (literally, the only ones left)

-10oz Sunshine Mint Silver Bar (looked quite lonely all by itself, so felt I had to)

-$10 Tube of 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars (BU)

-10x Morgan Silver Dollars (BU) sequential years 1878-1887 inclusive (various mints)

-1925 California Diamond Jubilee Half Dollar (AU)

-1927-D Peace Dollar (BU)

-1776-1976 Eisenhower Bicentennial Silver Dollar (BU)

-1915 Indian Head Gold $2.50 Quarter Eagle (AU)

-2016 1/10oz American Gold Eagle (BU)

(No other gold to be had in larger denominations than this)

Nevertheless, I’m happy with the selections I made (and the deals negotiated), regardless of their somewhat random nature. I especially liked the Morgan Dollars and will look to acquire more.
