Red spots on silver coins

Recommended Posts

Hello forum. I recently purchased all the coins from the four horsemen of the apocalypse series on eBay. 2 of the coins I received from 2 different sellers had some od red spots on them looking rusty. Can u guys clarify what it is or if I was scammed x2??  The spot is under the second horse from the lefts mouth. I have a famine coin with similar spotting only more but smaller.

Kind regards

The top image is brown to my eye - it is tarnish.

The lower image there are marks around the scale nearest the rider. It gives me the impression something was on the surface of the round which has reacted with the silver - there is certainly a centre to the largest dot. Then there looks like splash marks at about 4 o'clock on the lower horseman round.

No way of saying if you have been scammed. Being scammed is being sold fake coins or bullion when it said proof. The lower round does not look the same quality of finish. It is not the same light and i am not familiar with this series. You would need to weigh, measure and specific gravity the round to tell you if it were silver.

Yah I'm getting a gram weight asap.

Seller seemed very legit with over 6000 reviews so I didn't feel like it was shady at all. Milkspots I can handle when they are bot proof coins. But sold as brilliant Uncirculated the red stuff bugs me and both sellers have been very helpful so I guess it's just what it is. Small damages from the mint or something. Since the error is on coins sold by different sellers.

I had a 2oz Egyptian Series Anubis get the exact same reddy brown mark in his ear but mine was far worse than yours is. I fixed it with a dunk in the silver dip and a very light burl round with a cotton bud also soaked in silver dip (just like cleaning your ears for real) and this took it away without marking the round.

Do u have a brand or label for the silver dip?

Shocked to visit part of my silver stack today to find some coins suffering prominent red 'rusty' spots :o It's Nieu stuff - Steamboat Willie and Star Wars coins. The Owls in the same box (OK it wasn't stored properly, I knew that, that's why I went today to sort them out) are fine.

I would love to know what causes this and what to do about it (guess dip is all that can be tried?).

Never had this problem before so a big surprise for me, not of the pleasant sort!

The coins are genuine and came in one order from Goldsilver.be, part of a forum group order. The affected coins were in baggies, but one Owl was too and that is fine.

Any further input very welcome, thanks!

I strongly recommend that you don't use dipping solutions on bullion. Use the aluminum foil and baking soda method. It cleans tarnish quite well and is much gentler than dips.

Give me a few days as my camera is not very good and I have lots going on.

no the only posting you should do with these shocking coins is sending them off to me for smelting. LOL

sorry bud you knew I couldn't help it.

PS Text me or let me know... I have a few ideas...… hmmmm
