2012 & 2005 Sovereigns for Investment

Recommended Posts

Hi All, as you will be aware the sovereigns from 2005 and 2012 are a different design. With this in mind I wanted to ask whether you guys thought that in the long run they could be better investments than the average modern year sov? It seems possible to pick them up for a low premium so I’m almost inclined to look at them over “random year” or “best value” coins.

Keen to hear eat people’s thoughts. Tom

i am not massively keen on either but i do have both.

You will see from the link that the 2005 sovereign has a bullion mintage of 45.5K and 2012 it says 750k. The 2012 has a bit of a messy design which i find hard to make out without a longer look. The 2005 is a cleaner design which i prefer. So on the basis of design and mintage i would opt for 2005. If you have a year with nothing going for it then 2005 would be my choice for sure and probably 2012 if it is in good condition. i have not even looked at the prices on these coins, it is just how i feel on the basis of looks and numbers.

Just had a look on ebay - the 2005 coin is certainly selling for more money, which fits in with my thoughts. i think you would be fortunate to get the 2005 for a basic price so if you can then grab it. i think you would struggle to get either. Both sovereigns are coins a sovereign collector will want in their collection and passing collectors will take just b/c they are different but the 2012 with a mintage of 750k is never going to be a real premium coin.

They say the 2012 looks a lot better as a proof - but they go for lots of money.  The 2005 is a bit cartoon-like but I agree it is a nicer bullion coin than the 2012.  You may want to think about the 2002 as well.

I've got (Well my daughter has got) a 2005 and I like the design I got it from a well known sovereign forum member about a year ago now but later on in the year when I crack open my year saving pot I might grab the 2002 and 2012 as well if I can get them for a good price 👍
