Does it have to be new?

Pre -33 US?  St. Gaudens?

Maybe a little bit more and get a £5 Sov.

Mexican 50 peso?

There's lots of choice at that price range, but it needs to be special for a special occasion 😀

* Oriental Brits are lovely too

I would go with the unicorn qb still can get them for a decent price.

Seconded! Although I'd also consider the dragon while the premium is still pretty low.

I recently faced this very same dilemma and chose the QB Dragon. I'm intrigued by all the interest in the Oriental border Britannia. Do people see this as something that's going to really pick up in value when they're all sold out? For what it's worth I noted down the premiums of all the main 1oz coins on the day I made my choice. I'm going to be interested to see in a year's time which ones have gained the most (at least in terms of premiums at the same dealer), and I'll be happy to admit if I've made the wrong choice/recommendation.

Also, the title of this thread should really be "First world dilemma"... :)

I was confused by the birthday reference!

I didn't realise you were thinking about profit, I thought it was something to keep.

That's the nature of PMs I guess 😀

I would go QB, the designs are done once, the Oriental border could appear next year with a different date on it for all we know. I had two lions but gave one away to chards for spot about a year ago and bought the griffin. Now the griffin is starting to carry a premium too so the pain is wearing off. I imagine the others will do well too but I had no idea any of them would become premium coins, they are 1 oz bullion when all is said and done.

The premium on the griffin is getting very close to that of the lion in some places. Given that many more lions were sold I could see the griffin and later issues eventually overtaking the lion in premium.

Incidentally, if potential resale values were not an issue then obviously you'd just want to go for the nicest looking coin.... which brings us back to the Queen's Beasts series again... ;)
