Does anyone own any 1933 - 1945 reichmarks? Im interested in world history and have old sovereigns, crowns etc and Im thinking of adding some of these coins to my collection. Do you feel its morally wrong to own something that help to prop up such a terrible regime or is it just a piece of history to remember this period by?

Thoughts please.

You started this thread off by suggesting some people might feel it is morally wrong to collect German coins from the 'Nazi' period because you suggested it was 'such a terrible regime.' I wondered why you feel it was a 'such a terrible regime'. i have a keen interest in politics and propaganda and how it is use to mold the the way people think, so i am interested to know why think what you appear to. As i said i don't have any of these coins, particularly b/c there seem to be so many fakes and plated replica around.

It looks that way. Its a shame because the thread was a debate on why its ok to own nazi coins despite the artocities and was completely above board but its about to risk descending into questionable territory :-S

Ok. Let's look at this a bit more "neutral":

Can we collect coins from any of these on the list without offending anyone?

As long as we are not gloryfying their evil action, yes.

i asked a question - i made no assertions as to good and bad or indifferent. Clearly free speech is dead, killed by the thought police. i was interested to know why the question was asked. i doubt anyone would ask the question about any other coins from any other country from any other period.

Does this mean I can't buy any American coins while the orange rug wearer is president as I don't agree with his politics ? Does this mean I have to read up on the politics of all these African countries and Pacific islands I buy coins from ?

My profile picture is of my 1939 dated nazi era Walther PPK which is absolutely beautiful workmanship, I have 9 German WW2 era guns (plus other nations),  people like German stuff for all different reasons, the high quality and the late war low quality and shortcuts and inventivenes, they were the first big recyclers of captured and altered military weapons, their uniforms were extremely smart compared to ours, but being designed by Hugo Boss of aftershave fame I am not surprised, then there is the attraction of the infamy and evilness of it all, which fascinates many people,  much the same why people like to keep poisonous snakes as pets I guess.

And before anyone says I am a nazi I aint, I research WW2 weaponary and write about it, I have nearly 40 weapons, 100 of ordnance and probaby close to 300 books on all aspects of WW2 of all nations.

I thought the Nazis were rotters

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

EDIT: In fact, I would go even further and suggest that the fear of being labeled a nazi is probably putting some people off posting in this very thread. I guarentee there a a few members reading and wanting to contribute, but are so scared of being associated with the topic they choose not to post anything! Come on in guys and gals! I promise we arent trying to indoctrinate you!

The Astra 9mm is an absolute monster.

You may have noticed several posts have been pulled from the thread. Two of them are mine. i can perhaps understand moderators pulling posts even though 'nothing' was actually said. It was perhaps the fear of what might be said - by perhaps someone like me. Someone who speaks his mind and loves to shine a light on the lies we are told. It is most interesting. As i pointed out the thread was started asking for opinions on the 'morality' of collecting coins from a particular country from a particular period in history. There are no other coins in the history of coins that question would ever arise, well none i can think of.

Voltaire said "To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticise."  Shining a light on this era is what woke me up to so many lies i had been fed all my life. It is what made me stop believing what authority tells me. It made me angry b/c i realised i was being taken for a fool. i was being lied to and worse still at times elements within society demand i accept their lies as fact when i can see on close inspection they are ridiculous impossibilities.

Yeah the Astra 600/43 is a rare and large gun, it was made under contract for the nazi's by the Spanish to German specs.

Mine had quite an interesting history, it was part of a contract for only about 40,000 guns (small fry by WW2 war standards) , the Normandy landings stopped the guns being delivered through France, plus the fact Franco didnt want to do anything to antagonise the allies now that we were obviously winning, so the guns were put into the Spanish governments stores, after WW2 the German police needed pistols, with the Walther factory destroyed and what was left in the Soviet sector, and not allowed to manufacture their own weapons yet they asked the Spanish government who then sold them their pistols a second time ?, after the West German police had finished with them a few ended up with Irish police forces, I cannot remember without reading my books whether it was north or south, and most of the remainder went to the USA.

ALL my guns and munitions are legally owned with correct licences (if applicable),  there is 100's of calibres (does not matter about the weapon so much) that you can own fully working without a licence, you can have 2 identical revolvers from same year eg 1911, same maker, model, barrel length etc, one you cannot own unless its deactivated (unless you can get a historic weapon licence which some shooters and museums possess) the other you can own fully working without a licence (though you cannot have any firearms related nor serious criminal convictions to buy or own or inherit one) as its on the Home offices website of obsolete calibres,  I have an anti tank gun that you can own and shoot in this country (only three ranges that can take them though in UK), a friend in the US says that even they cannot own one of those in most states and even then unless they got a hard to get licence to own anti material weapons (or anything over .50 cal).

Sorry for waffling I have been working in this field for over 30 years so get a tiny bit annoyed when anyone trys to tell me the laws ?

Here you go you can own all these calibre weapons fully working without a licence, some are modern looking automatic pistols, not all are really old.

Its not helping to prop them up now, its history. Just owning or not owning a coin is going to make no difference.

There will always be some special snowflakes that will be offended, depends on how much that will bother you.

Let’s keep the quality of a thread. Just saying.......and as Winston Churchill famously said.....”Keep calm and carry on......”

;) If a person chooses NOT to collect a coin, that does not make them a snowflake for goodness’ sake. Or if so, I will let my long deceased lived to 106 grandmother know what you silly people who never experienced much by comparison, think of her. Pfffft.

My choice of words may be a bit harsh (I am dismayed by how easy people take offence these days). I am not referring to your or anyone's personal choice to own the coin but to point out that some people will be offended by the *original poster*  owning the coin.

People fought and died so othr people could have the right to live and choose as they wish. I have no problem with that, nor should anyone else. It is an historical coin. I stated earlier that I am not interested in collecting such coins. It is still far too near the event for me. That is my choice. But, “Carry on.....” :) otherwise what the hell were they fighting for !

As for other rubbish spouted on this thread, here is a thought for them. Humans are the greatest killers in history, after nature and asteroids. To think we are somehow noble and kind and kind as a species is a self imposed illusion.

The 5 Reichsmark has some quite revealing edge writing on the Nazi mintages, first appearing from 1934.

Gemeinnutz Geht Vor Eigennutz

Translates to (I think - correct if I am wrong please)

"Common good comes before self"

Nazi's were all about big government. You can see that this idea/slogan would not be out of place in the soviet union. The Nazi's were socialists, not really right wing, yet people see the nationalism first and assume right wing - people often don't see the most dangerous attribute. Nationalism is not dangerous on its own. If you look into the horrors of both movements, the millions murdered, the Nazi 'labour' camps and Bolshevik 'labour' camps (especially early in the revolution), you will not see any difference between the swastika on red background and the hammer and sickle on red background. Personally I don't know why the latter is allowed and the former is not. They both represent the exact same thing - collectivism, hell on earth. The government over the individual.

By contrasts the Wiemar 5 Reichsmark coinage had edge writing that translates to;

'Unity, Justice and Freedom'

Interesting how quickly those ideals can be thrown aside and forgotten is it not!

why have you got what looks to be live bullets . and are these guns deactivated. if they are not then they are illegal in the uk.

ofc they are,Deactivated firearms more or less takes all the value outta said guns anyway. It's a nice collection all the same :)

Also i don't think anyone is dumb enough to post illegal firearms they own on a forum. All would be obsolete calibres, deactivated or legal to own

and everything is illegal in the uk ?

As far a coinage goes the 'spoils of war' mean the victors get to loot and tell history, coinage will come under that.  I do not collect nazi items or in this instance German coinage at that time.  Do not feel bad about owning coinage, it's what you think say and your actions that matter not a coin.

It's strange that people have problem with Nazism and no such problem with Communism even though both ideologies are just as evil and responsible for millions of deaths.

I could probably pretty much wander around most of the UK and Europe wearing a Hammer and Sickle badge on my clothing without any hassle but I would imagine that I would get a  lot of abuse very quickly  if I wore a Swastika.

I have a problem with communism esp Marx

The most lethal regimes the world has ever seen have been communist. Alot of people forget that.

Add to the mix that, in fact, the Nazis were left wing socialists. People often forget what the terms left and right actually mean. Economically speaking, which is the correct method, the Nazis were of the left since they preached class warfare, and the nationalisation of education, health care, transportation, and other major industries. Right wing economics preaches free market capitalism, private ownership and small government.

The Nazis were right wing do not believe the propaganda, the far right have to rely on votes from the poor/working class same as in Italy at that time the far right new the only way it could achieve power was through the poor/working class hence the social policies when the real big policies was to Govern alongside big business!! Nationalism!  Hence small government because the business owns runs most of it!!! Hence far right!!

I won’t buy a Japanese car because what my grandpa went through in Burma.   Silly I know, but doesn’t mean I worry about anyone else owning or thinking they are a thing of beauty. But it’s a personal choice.

im like a few on here with mild ocd and find the symmetrical coins attractive trouble is a few of them are from the communist/nazi era which leaves me with a dilemma

Yes good points, from my research the Soviets under Stalin were in a worse predicament than the nazi population under Hitler, with Stalin/communism, the poor were kept poor, the rich lost a lot of the land, you could be executed for the most minor thing or for doing nothing at all wrong, just being part of a purge, under the Nazis, you could be successful even if you were from a working class background especially if you joined something like the SS, there was little unemployement due to armaments production, things like the building of the autobahn and other crazy huge building projects, and you were pretty safe as long as you fitted with their warped doctrine on race/religion and toed the line, if Hitler had not persecuted the jewish population (and all others that did not fit in with his warped predijuces) and had not gone to war, he could of been one of the worlds greatest leaders of that time.

The victors always write the history books
